So my recruiter just sent me a great job offer and it begins July 20. Because it starts relatively soon, he wants me to send him all the Visa documents. The problem is, I haven't heard back from a teacher at the school so I can pick his brain, so I haven't accepted the position yet. My recruiter says that even if I say "no" to the job offer, he'll send the documents where they need to go. I am concerned because this includes the FBI CBC, which took me months to get.

Am I right in not wanting to send the documents?

Don't send the documents until you've signed a contract. Once you send said documents you're essentially locked into using the recruiter you send them to. Essentially, the recruiter is positioning himself/herself to own your rights.

You can fax or email photocopies of your documents for your recruiter to use to help land you a position and to prove that you actually have them. But, as northway advised, do not send them until you have agreed to a contract. Send all the documents and the signed contract together. This will allow you to use multiple recruiters.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought your certified documents went to the school so they could apply to Korean Immigration for your visa number, NOT the recruiter.

I thought the recruiter was just the middle man here; fielding the questions, selling the job to foreigner teachers but not actually doing any of the processing of visa stuff????

I personally wouldn't be sending anything apart from electronic proof (eg--jpeg file of your scanned documents) of my commitment to come to Korea, at this stage.

If you decide to accept that job, well different story.

Just as an update, I did accept the job offer. It's with an Olympiad school in Seongdong. A teacher at the school gave me a great reference, so I accepted.

In China, you are correct. My current school just got my passport and diploma. They are doing it. Especially in Beijing. Recruiters are completely useless here.

However, in Korea, I worked with 5 schools. Only the rich schools (like in Gangnam) or the ones far out from a major city did the visa processing. One well known recruiter (and I) did a lot of work to get my visa processed for a GEPIK school. That school did nothing. Same with 2 other schools.

The question here is if you want to use the recruiter or not. Most likely, you don't want to commit to just one recruiter and shouldn't give your documents out until the "final hour". But when you decide on a school, you got to let go.
