| I've been told by 3 people now, 1 of them the university that hired me who spoke to an immigration officer, that I can extend my E2 without a background check, but only once. Does anyone know any details about this? My BC is currently in "state department limbo" and I'm getting nervous... |

Those who were IN Korea and on a valid E2 at the time of the change (Dec. 2010) will, under a period of grace, be allowed 1 (one) change of status without the need for new documentation (FBI check or degree COPY with apostilles).
If you will be needing new documents they will inform you when you extend your ARC that they will be needed for any further change.

| Thanks^^ that's what I was told as well. Do you know if your new contract must start the day after your old one expires, or can you have a few weeks to "unwind" ? |

Simple extension with the same employer: the contracts must be concurrent.
Changing employers: there can be up to 30 days between contracts if you are doing a transfer/extension at the same time and it is completed before your current ARC expires and AFTER your current contract is complete.
If you are changing employers with a trip OUT OF THE COUNTRY in between you MAY need to get a new visa (entailing ALL new documentation).

| I had an immigration person tell me the same thing as ttompaz, but the problem is many of us face (esp if we came with EPIK or similar) is our visa expires a year after we got to Korea for the orientation but our contracts don't actually end for another week or two, so really you use up that one free "pass" extending your visa and then when transferring jobs, you have to have the documents. |

I called the immigration office today and they agreed that I wouldn't need a new FBI BC. But injuredeagle brings up a good point about the contract dates. My E2 expires on 7/21, my contract finishes on 8/4, and my new contract starts on 9/1. More than 30 days from visa expiration, but not from the contract completion. Ugh! If the US were just more efficient with their paperwork like other countries, this wouldn't be a problem.
I wonder if my university would "adjust" my contract date... : ) |

LOL... so true... they could be as efficient as the USCIS (now that is a horror story for anyone who has had the misfortune of having to get a visa to work in the states).

So this is true?
I'm renewing my hagwon contract for six months, and my FBI BC is already being processed. My boss just said I don't need it. I honestly don't really believe him so I was going ahead with it anyway just in case...
Is there any official website that says this? |

It was announced on the Kimmi website last January.
If you are unsure then you can call Kimmi and know what you need to do for YOUR particular case.
If your FBI check is coming, when you get it, submit it and then it is done and you won't have further problems (assuming you used a copy of your degree and not the original when you got your E2).

| Just spoke to a super nice lady at the DoS who informed me that my BC was sent yesterday by express mail : ) Hopefully this will be a moot point soon... |
