Etc.

ALL of the decent positions are recruited and filled by word of mouth and networking.

not strictly true.

i looked on Dave's ESL Jobs board for uni jobs, and have managed to get 2 interviews without knowing anyone.

whether I actually bag a job is another matter though...

We are wondering:

What is your degree level? You have a much better shot at a decent university position with an MA under your belt.

Did you major in a related dicipline?

How many years of teaching experience do you have, at what type of institution, and at what age levels?

I am wondering is a DELTA certificate ok for applying or do I need a Masters?
I heard peopel get the job with a Masters in ny field i.e. Religion, Math etc., so logically I am guessing a DELTA cert should be enough.

I also have a B.Sc.I.T with Business degree with 4 years teaching as a NSET. 2 years in Korea and 2 years in Germany.

Many top jobs post open ads on their own website.

And you to use quotes.

OP: networking is critical, as is responding quickly to postings. Many jobs are filled by internal hiring; current teachers recommending people. This is why networking means a lot.

b.sc in i.t. so networking shouldn't be a problem for op. Razz

Some universities, usually smaller ones in cities or those located outside of cities, may still hire people with just the BA. The CELTA/DELTA addition would be great, but the MA trumps.

All of the people I know at the higher paying, big university jobs have their MA, plus the CELTA/DELTA and other certs. At the top, it gets much more competitive.

Most of the teachers I know at SKY and other top unis don't have CELTAs or DELTAs.

My search for a university job this year(with a BA) has just about petered out.

I'm going to start a distance MA program in the fall, hopefully Birmingham's, and ideally do the second half on campus. I'm thinking of doing a CELTA in the middle somewhere too. Would that have a huge impact on my chances at a big university gig straight after finishing my MA? Or do most of the big ones require experience at the university level as well?(I will have had 3 years at kindy/elementary hagwons)

Interesting, Bibbitybop. Every instructor I know at a SKY university has the CELTA/DELTA, and some of them are actually CELTA/DELTA instructors.

The key for the SKY schools is the MA in a related major and experience, so I don't doubt that there are indeed a lot of people without the extra buzz and whistle certs.
