| Always the back. It's a habit I picked up in the Middle East, where it's considered "flirting" if a woman sits in the front seat. |

| Then he came after me and was yelling and he grabbed my arm and coat and said he wanted his money. I yelled at him and told him not to touch me. This happened 3 or 4 times. I can't remember, he just kept grabbing my coat. Finally I was screaming at him and crying, "Get away from me!" He let go and I left as quickly as I could. |
Being a big guy, I never have to deal with this. But I've had friends here (all female) go through it more times that I can count. I would LOVE for it to happen once when I was around...
Sorry it happened to you.
The one time a guy did try to rip me off, I asked him in Korean why he was taking the long way home, and why the fare was much more than it usually was. He said I didn't know what I was talking about. I said okay, no problem. Got out my book, wrote down his name and number, and waited to get home. When we did, I started to go for my wallet to pay. Meter said 25000, but I'd taken that route many times and it was never over 12000. As I was counting the money, I said thank you *name*, and read his number to him. The look on his face was priceless, and he just said, "Uh, Man won, ok?" And he asked for the paper.
For the record, I sit in the back because it makes me feel like I'm in a limousine... |

| Always the back. It's a lot more relaxing. Also, if I were a cabbie, I wouldn't want people sitting up front with me. |

| Varies... with friend (boy or girl) back seat. And then if I'm carrying a number of bags with me... the back. And lastly... depending on where the taxi driver pulls up and stops.... if it is toward the back.... that's where I'll get in. If it's the front... then the front. I assume 'they' are more comfortable... which is why they have parked in that place. |

Alright, looks like I'm a bit of a strange one but i don't think I'm going to change my habits.
I'll risk the occasional trouble from the 1% of taxi drivers for some Korean practice.

Basically, the fare was 2 300 won. I gave him 10 000 won and said I'm really sorry as it was all i had. He said to me in Korean I'm not going to give any change, so as we were discussing this matter he open-palmed me in the heart(i think i have some bruised ribs as they hurt a bit still).
Without thinking I whacked him below the left eye very hard, he dropped my money, I picked it up and walked very quickly away as he was much bigger, had a car and I know how much trouble you can get in for hitting someone in the head here. He definantly had a black eye the next day
Foolish thing to do I know but if I had not of hit him I'm sure he would have tried again |

| Last weekend I had a taxi driver who could speak pretty good english. This is usually good but unfortunately the guy was a totally pervert. He wouldn't stop talking about vaginas. Asking me , in detail, about the difference between Korean and Western vaginas. I tried to change the subject but he just wouldn't stop. Fortunately the ride was only 15 minutes. |

Like Korea Newfie I don't have any problems due to being a big guy. I can't imagine being whacked in the head like what happened to just because (Are you short?).
At least that's my thinking, I could be wrong and suffer for it someday.
I sit in the front and try to converse with the driver, as is common back home, and over half the time it's successful. The rest of the time I get hostility in return and say very little.
Hearing the horror stories around here I'm tempted to sit in the back from now on, and I might sometimes. (And it's understandable why women would.)
But I don't like treating people as servants, which is how it feels to me to travel in the back seat. And old habits die hard.
So the front seat it is. |

same as the 'how do you shut rude kids up' thread... i'm betting the same people who don't say hi or talk to kids are the same ones who sit in the back seat... excluding the front seat seatbelt reason...
i have no issues... i am friendly enough. i always sit in the front seat when in a taxi without my chick...
i feel like a rude ass bugger just sitting in the back.. i sit up front and try to talk with him/her. about 20% don't want to play but that leaves a hell of a lot that do...
i have a much more enjoyable ride, the time goes faster, i get the chance to talk to a new person (which i like doing), i'd say that 80% who do want to play enjoy being treated like a person instead of nothing, the front seat, being adjustable, is so far superior with space and comfort than the good ol bench in the back..
from what i can gather from home and on tv... most americans sit in the back and most aussies sit in the front. no proof to that though. |

Bummer event. No excusing the driver's behavior, but can I make a suggestion to you & others to avoid recurrences? For some reason, 10000 won notes often dont go over well paying for a short ride. I try to make a point of carrying singles or a 5-note if I intend to take a taxi. If I only have big bills, I ask the driver before getting in if thats okay. |

| Interesting observation that you bring up there wylde...I'm an antipodean too...a friend of mine was doing his thesis (Phd sociology) and was helping out the professor doing a few side projects...one of which asked 'where do you sit in a taxi?' The theory was- the more egalitarian (equal) a society is- the more likely that you will sit in a front seat...this is especially true if you are female. I am and I do sit in the front seat... |

I always sat in the front in China- where the drivers are in a cage within the car.
Here in Korea I always try to sit in the back seat, cause cabbies are around 75% more likely than the average to ask if I'm Russian. Even though I sit in the back seat, I do usually make attempts at conversation with the drivers. My favorite was the one who only seemed to know English from Elvis songs. |
