Ever teach for a hagwon? There are reasons why many of us with diplomas, clean police reports, and ok health choose to teach in public schools. |
I've taught in both. Generally I'd say the advantages and disadvantages to them balance out about equal nowadays.

There are shady recruiters who do that. Then, after the school tells the current foreign teacher that they won't renew, the three blonde bimbettes suddenly decide to teach in Seoul and the school gets stuck with a South African or whoever else is on their list. There's a large GEPIK recruiter who does this all of the time. |
That sounds very believable. |

Heads up:
My HT gave me word that some education officer wants all K English Teachers to report on the full cost of their NET for all the years they were there, and any problems they have caused.
I find this strange, asked if they want to know anything good, she replied "no".
Probably going to find a biased "study" in the paper with random silly "problems" from one or two of the worst NETs and the total cost of ALL NETs in Gyeonggi. Soon.
This is my last year... |
That's marvy.
But it's good to know GEPIK is hard at work to root out all its problems and retool itself. ㅋㅋㅋ
Ugh. This hiring freeze is ruining everything. I was already going to leave my school anyway, but I wanted to be able to say it was because of the administration. But this freeze makes it nobody's fault I won't stay on.
Transferring to another public school doesn't seem an option if no one's hiring til September.
And it looks like the hagwons are paying less than the public schools...for more hours.
Oh, well. Off to...other pastures |

Korea has never been a reliable option. The moment you think you've gotten comfortable..they make you jump again. Its always been the way.
On paper it appears that if you can put in e.g 5 solid, unbroken years of work without moving, then you can save a whack. But it never happens. There is always some unforeseen re-arrangement around the corner to put you back to square 1.

Due to circumstances that were somewhat beyond my school's control, I have had four different co-teachers this year. The original one had a difficult pregnancy and had to go on bedrest for a few weeks, then there was maternity leave, and now what will be a year off. I am on my third substitute. The independance and flexibility that I have demonstrated in this position would usually be considered admirable, but instead of giving me a renewal and a raise for this, they are cutting the budget and giving me the old heave-ho. |

Lighten up, Francis. We all know that there are schools that demand American teachers. Besides, did you read the full quote?

Yes Penelope, I did read the full quote. I also considered what I wrote to be light...fluffy even. I mean...it made Triban lol...I don't think Triban would have wasted his lol time if it wasn't light. It was light.
Cheers. |

Doubt it. But they'll knock 50% off.
Did anyone else's school not get the memo about this hiring freeze? Why is it that with this and the FBI CBC, I heard it first on Dave's? |

How has this hiring freeze affected GEPIK teachers and recruiters? |

I think my recruiter was unaware of the freeze until I told him. When I told him I was interested in public schools, he said I missed the deadline for EPIK and that I should stick with GEPIK as they hire year round still. I told him about the freeze and in his next email he was offering me an after school job.
How is it affecting me? Well, not nearly as much as the FBI CBC and apostilled diploma nonsense. I was going to try and get my documents in hand so I could transfer to another school before my ARC expired, but I see now it isn't going to happen.
So for cost effectiveness, I'm letting my school pay for my return ticket home, then applying from there while visiting my family and friends and then have the new school pay my way back. But that's just if I decide to come back to Korea... Starting to consider other countries in the sea.
By the way, I'm not so sure how strict the freeze is. GEPIK coordinator I talked with said that in spite of the freeze some schools are still hiring. But there seem to be cuts, too.
The office of education was reviewing six schools in my area, only three of them would be able to keep their GEPIK teachers. My school was one of the three, and had I recontracted with them....if you've read another particular thread I wrote, you'd know there was no chance of this...but if I had, I would have had a seven week unpaid vacation and then I'd have come back in September to start up with them again.
But, whatever. Seems like these after school jobs might be the new deal, even though they're public schools with hagwon vacations...and not certain about a curriculum/textbook...which seems like it would be English Camp for a year instead of two weeks. But still they don't seem that bad. |
