At our hagwon, we have what are called "Intensives" during vacation. This is my third one, and this time around, we work from 12:30-10:30. Classes start at 1:30 and go until 10:10. On top of the 29 classes/ week (40-45 minutes each) I already teach, I'll be teaching at least 2 more per day, most likely 3. In addition, I'm completely designing a class from scratch. On top of this, I have regular classes which I've already been teaching for a month and a half, 11 of them essay classes, for which I then have to correct and grade writing samples. Furthermore, we have a book reading program, where I have to grade 200+ "book reports" a week, which are so poorly constructed that most just get giant red X's. And to add on to this, I have to call every student that was absent when classes are over.

Who can top this in order to make me feel less like crying?

I do, but the bar is set so high that I barely reach the overtime limit. Thus, the payoff is insignificant.

This is when many a school get creative with time and schedules. Be aware of your might be nickeled and dimed. 12:30 seems a little hard but me I have done 8:00am to 9:00pm before.

Also OP why are you complaining. I mean if this was your first contract with the school I would totally support it. But if you have know of this and done for two years why did you renew or put up with this. You have made your choice. Ok maybe you just want this....

Ahhh that is too bad for you. There There.

Not that bad, but my school spread intensives over July and August last year to avoid paying anyone overtime for them, as only get overtime if we exceed the 120 hours per month in our contract (apparently the 6 hours per day/30 hours per week aren't relevant).

Thanks for that.

Yes, it's my second contract. The last two weren't bad. But they combined the worst of both into one massive attack this time around.

Ya - ok you do have a reason to complain. Well as I commented above be careful on the OT as they will probably not count any breaks or that as towards the final hours. Also find out what you OT rate is - get that sorted before you start. Also consider talking to the school. Ask for some leeway on the paperwork and that. Say that you will likely not be able to get all essays marked in a timely manner. If they say no - learn and try to figure out some ways to fake it/get it done quickly or just ignore it.

Also try NOT to make it hard on yourself. If you can slouch something off or do something less then perfect - do it. Remember the course has to be good enough not perfect. Plan for prefect and expect to see it all go to waste in a day.

No, they've never once screwed anyone out of money or didn't pay something. That's the best thing about my hagwon. We get everything we're owed in a timely manner. They just make us work unreasonably for it.

If you are not getting more than 3mil in salary per month then I would say you are getting overworked for your pay. I get a bit less than that and although I gotta work 30 hours most weeks my classes are pretty cruisy and I am not really busy except for testing times.

Let me try.

I have absolutely no classes today (as I did the last two days) and no classes tomorrow due to week long exams that are taking place now. So right now I'm kinda bored.

Feel better? Laughing

So the exams are for 4 days then. Not really week long.

I've topped it quite frequently. Summer sessions ARE tough. In my life I have had to teach from 9 am until 11:30 pm, because I was here BEFORE they set the hakwon curfew at 10 pm. Of course, I still owed a great deal of money back home, and the OT I earned was the reason I stayed in the job...and THAT boss actually paid a progressive OT rate -- up to 40 hours a week of class was straight time, 41-60 was time and a half, 61+ was double time.

80 TEACHING hours a week was not uncommon for me during intensive periods, with a personal high of 94.

I wouldn't do it again at this point in my life, but you said you wanted to hear about someone working MORE OT than you.

Heck, if you take out the phone counselling, and add in MORE essay correction, you could be describing my last month. A big red X wouldn't cut it on any papers I correct....

Feel better? I have, when times require it for some reason, worked more and longer...without starting a thread to tell folks about it Very Happy

...just busting on ya. If you were kvetching in person, I'd buy ya a beer or coffee and raise it to ya. OT sucks when yer innit....
