It's hard to beat the cost of shipping via the Korean PO to the USA but I'm wondering if anyone has found the best shipping rates or method from the US to Korea?

I wouldn't care if it took 4-6 weeks getting to Korea - books, backup stuff, clothes etc....

Any ideas or suggestions?

There are no good rates. Pay for and schlepp an extra bag on your flight.

Yeah, based on the general non-response here and what what I've been able to find (basically nothing), schlepping or mailing are the two options.

Thanks for trying!

I found a shipping company in Houston that will do LCL (less than container load) shipments, but only to Busan. Rates seemed reasonable, but probably only a little less than taking extra bags. I'm going to call them and see if once the stuff's in Busan if the company will taekbae them to me in Gwangju, but only because I'm moving there for awhile (4 years or more) and I want my stuff. I don't want to be taking 5 bags or so on the plane.

I would think that there would be similar shipping companies in cities with large Korea populations. You just have to do some fancy googling.

Thanks Krats,

I'd probably pass the "not worth it" point pretty quickly with the relatively small amount I have or could have mailed to me in the future. Given the connections that would need to be made on both the US side and the Korean side (Busan to Seoul) with a real shipping company - I'll probably just bite the bullet and pay for the postage.

If you see anything though I'm sure others would appreciate it also.

Regards,
tideout

Fair enough, although if you have that little and you are still stateside, take OiGirl's advice. Asiana charges $110 for an extra bag. That same 50 lbs costs somewhere around $300 by USPS (according to my cursory look at the USPS website).

Such a shame they did away with international surface mail. That was awesome.

United charged me $200 for having an overweight bag, and almost charged me $400 for 2 overweight bags but I moved stuff around (strange that they weighed each piece and not in total). It might pay to shop around on policies on this.

Thanks guys. The issue on this trip at least is I'm doing some traveling before hand and so won't fly in directly w/ an extra bag etc....but it's a good idea price wise to take the hit on the bag vs. the postal route.
