So I'm setting up to go, but my plans to leave on Monday for Seoul (fortunately I left myself a little leeway, the plane leaves on Wednesday) seem to have run into a hitch.
See, I wasn't going to wire money home until I got my paycheck, which happens Monday, but I realized I need a wire receipt to bring to the pension office.
Now I set up a KEB account because I heard KEB internet banking is the cheapest way to wire money home, and I decided I'd try to get everything ready to wire except hitting submit, so I know how things work. And it's looking like KEB won't actually let me use their internet banking. It looks like KEB won't let me log in until it's installed some stupid security program called "CK Key Pro"
However I have a Mac, and can't install that program. I went to the FAQ, helpfully available only in Korean, and clicked on the Mac link. There is a url in the second figure, (keypro.clientkeeper.co.kr:8080/xwm/CKKeyPro/plugins/keypro.dmg), which I navigated to manually, and while let me download a dmg file, which I uses to install the keypro plugin.
Yet it's still not letting me log in, even after I restarted Safari (I know a lot of Korean sites are designed not to work in Firefox and Chrome), I assume because I don't have the exe file installed. Or it keeps redirecting me to the page that wants to install the exe file anyways.
So a couple questions:
1. Has anybody used KEB internet banking on a Mac? Any suggestions? (And on an unrelated note: do all Korean banks require stupid little plugins?)
2. If I can't use the KEB Internet banking, what's my next best option for wiring money?
3. What are the exact details I need to know for wiring money home (so I can at least bring those to the pension office, and so I can do it in person if I need to)?
Thanks

Bejebus, thanks
I told them I wanted to wire money home and they told me none of this.
I'm going home on Wednesday, so this is a one-time thing.
Where can I download this app?
Thanks again,

The easiest way is to open up the Easy One Foreign Remittance account or something of a similair name.
Take with you your passport, arc card and home country bank details (sort code, account number, address, SWIFT/BIC code and IBAN I think is what you need)
They'll set you up in ten minutes.
Once set up go to an ATM and transfer cash from the account your money is in now to the newly set up KEB account. That cash will then automatically be sent home with a fee of 18,000 won plus whatever your home bank charges you.
The maximum you can send from your Korean account to the KEB account is 6 million at one time so you may have to do several transfers.
By far the easiest way I have found of sending money home. As soon as you transfer the cash from account to KEB you'll get a text message with the exact amount of cash you transferred in USD or your home country currency. |
