Just wondering. Are there any gyopo who doesn't identify him/herself as a Korean?
Living in Korea is sort of like a torture to me. Too bad that I had to take care of my family here. |

Living in Korea is kind of torture for everybody.
( although, theres pros and cons to everything;)the overall situation of Korea is just not of a happy one AT ALL. |

Its far worse for gyopos, especially those who primarily identify as American-Canadian-what-have-you.
Imagine that instead of every time you speak Korean, many Koreans are no longer elated and surprised you can say the simplest words, but critical and nitpicky about the precise verb ending you've chosen or other nuances of the language. Many Koreans simply do not understand that language has nothing to do with blood.
The gyopos on here can correct what I'm saying, but this has been my perception as a white who lived in Korea. |

Yes, whether you're white, black, gyopo, full-on Korean, Misc. Asian, etc. there are certain things that will uniquely suck for you. Same with everywhere else.
Take life in your hands and you can usually overcome those things. |

mm, yes this. Although it does kinda get better as time goes on (people around you you know get less nitpicky) it's still very, very difficult if you don't have a solid background in Korean. You don't have the luxury of the 'oh he/she is a waygookin,' benefit of the doubt. Should've listened to your parents when they said to go to Korean school and learn some Korean back at home eh?  |

i cordially disagree with most of what is in this thread. i'm a gyopo that speaks very little korean, yet i've had very little issue with people giving me any gruff for it. i also don't feel that being a gyopo or not speaking much korean has been detrimental to my stay here overall. granted i don't sit back and take anything for granted though. i do actively work on the language as well as how i perceive things.
i came here with the mentality of working hard and getting what i wanted. so far both have been happening and this isn't just an isolated event as the correct mindset has allowed me to do so in other places as well.
i may be the voice of opposition here, but i say as long as anyone here is cognizant of the fact that they are not in their own country (which as simple as it sounds, most truly cannot) they have the upper hand by the simple fact they can speak english. now if said person uses their new-found knowledge to their advantage, in short, korea, or anywhere for that matter, can be their kingdom. |

Yeah, hanguel is hella difficult to learn;constants are ok but then it's all downhill from that point on.
Yeah and some gyops have control issues in that way..they know that a Westerner doesn't have that "inclination" , yet they still try to make you out to be "stupid" no matter how hard your trying..
And you're right, the familes don't help the situation AT ALL. |

I don't understand why kyopos come here. They're basically ignored by Koreans as "Koreans who can't speak Korean" and seen as inferior english teachers by korean parents..
ALOT of the kyopos I've met here have big time identity / anger / jealousy issues with Koreans AND caucasians. |

| I've met a fair number of kyopo who absolutely love it here and never want to leave, but perhaps it's merely anecdotal. |

| Well, from what I've heard, they do ok career wise, as most ESL job ads are most consistently geared towards F-4 visas. |

this is a pretty ignorant statement.
all kyopos don't speak korean?
if koreans see kyopos as inferior english teachers and that's the reason not to come, then should other asians and blacks and hispanics not come too? only whites should come? |

I'd say for all Gyopos its a mixed bag. Much harder if you don't speak the local lingo |
