..was what the school told my buddy, who just left for Korea. He has taught there before and I thought he was aware of the new visa rules. However, he has told me the school assures him that he can do all the necessary paperwork while IN Korea...even obtaining the background check (they needed someone ASAP and he taught prior to 2007 as well).
Basically, he did it like we used to in the past....degree, transcripts in hand and will do a visa run to Japan, AFTER the paper work comes through..............
Is this legit? The school assurede him things were cool..........I dont' know.
Anyone know if just showing up with the basics is still attainable, anymore (degree and transcripts...doing the rest in Korea)?

He is in for a rude shock.
Assuming he is NOT Canadian:
He will need a certified true (photo)copy of his degree with an apostille on it.
He will need a national CBC with an apostille on it.
He can make a visa run to Japan after he gets his visa confirmation number.
If he is Canadian he will need his documents certified at the Korean consulate in Canada.
In almost ALL cases he won't get a CBC in under 4 months if applying from Korea. IF he is on a 90 day tourist stamp that causes more issues.

| My understanding is that they're willing to overlook the lack of a current national CBC if you have had an E-2 prior and can provide proof that you're in the process of getting said national CBC. That said, all that could have been done in Canada, so this looks damn shady. |

Working on a tourist visa is illegal by any means. If he is caught, he will be fined and deported. They are harsher on the person breaking the immigration laws than to any hagwon that "told them too". Plus, he will have no health insurance. If anything happens, he will be out of luck. Not a chance I'd be willing to take while living in a foreign country.
On top of all that... If anything goes south with his hagwon, he will have no legal recourse. He is breaking the law working there, and the labor board won't even hear his case. What if they find another teacher before he gets his documents, and decide its not worth paying him anymore?
I would not recommend this to anyone. Its a bad idea and the likelihood that it will end in disaster is high. There are plenty of other jobs out there he can wait for his documentation.. Once he has that.. he's golden. |
