Hey, there is actually a fairly vibrant metal scene in Seoul. But it's really underground. The big legends are Crash who will be co-headlining the JiSan Music Festival. There is a black metal band in Seoul that does it right, right down to the corpse paint and bewildering onlookers with their stage show, they're called Skald. I've actually become a big fan of the better Korean metal bands. Crash (power thrash), Ishtar (melodic (they do covers of Nightwish)), Oathean (power metal), Skald (black metal), and Diesel Sneakers (thrash) being some of my favorite Korean bands.
This saturday is a good show with Skald, Diesel Sneakers, and Remnants of the Fallen (they're fronted by an ex-pat so there should be a higher than usual foreigner turnout).

'Power thrash'? What on earth is that? Let's not make up genres that don't exist, please.

I think people have been doing that with metal forever, why stop now? How many different sub genres of metal are there already?
Though I do agree that the excessive labeling of music with silly names is pretty annoying. I heard a band described the other day as "chillwave" and it made me want to punch who every came up with that word

Well yeah, but 'power thrash' makes no sense as power metal uses speed metal riffs in any case, sometimes thrash riffs. What a redundant genre to make up.

Crash is a metal band that has playing around Korea and Asia for well over a decade. Often switching genres between power metal and thrash metal. You can find their website, here: http://www.crashzon.com/2010/new/new.php

And you can listen to their music and then come on here and give the definitive declaration of what genre their music belongs in. Who knows you might actually like them and will be inspired to get off of your couch and attend a metal show in Korea.

I saw them play at Jisan last year and came away pretty impressed. I find it frustrating that I meet so many people here who talk about how into music they are and how much they love live music, then you give them an opportunity to go see a show and they turn you down. I think peoples don't hold a very open mind when it comes to Koreans and music.

You guys are aware that I started a thread about this-

https://www.facebook.com/#!/event.php?eid=142947189106139

-and will be attending said event, along with having seen Korean metal bands play live before, you know, just thought I'd mention it seeing as how I've never left my armchair.

Thanks!
That's excellent to hear!! I'll hope to see you there!
The Asian Metal Fest should be good. And they are featuring Napalm Death to bring in a wider audience,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aUJ24MSr-NM&feature=player_embedded

After the Asian metal fest there will be a two day music fest called the Trendkiller Extreme Feast 2011 on July 16th and July 17th. http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=169759033083715
The trend killer fest I'm really looking forward to and hopefully Juisin Productions or whoever can bring in more international bands before the summer's out.
And of course, this weekend is Core And Metal Fest 24th (Koreans just love their festivals don't they?!) which should be a really tight show.

These shows can also be found on the KoreanGigGuide.com website which is a must if you like live music and you are an ex-pat. It's always cool to see more foreigners at the underground shows and I hope to see some of you guys out there!

On the subject of Korean black metal, check out Aesop's blog post:

http://cosmichearse.blogspot.com/2007/12/possessed-by-korean-black-metal.html

In case you weren't aware, he's the drummer in Ludicra and Agalloch.

Also, David of Woods of Ypres occasionally posts video clips with relevance to metal in Seoul:

Finally, on facebook there is a Korea metal group called 'Korean Metal Live Scene'. On last.fm there's also a Korean metal group, but it's not active.
