Hi

Contract on my current apartment is up shortly. Principal taking me to apartment owned by her friend tomorrow to view it. I wasn't consulted on this.

My current apartment I can't sleep in so I would like to change but not to a place owned by a friend of my principal as I'm worried about privacy.

Question: can I demand the 500,000 allowance and get my own place? Or can the school say that I have to either move to the principal's place or they renew the contract on my current apartment?

This is the best thing you can do. VIEW IT!!!

Then, say you don't like it. You don't have to tell them about privacy issues. If you really want to get your place, then you know more about this than many of us. Unless you are new to this, you already know you need to put up a security deposit. If you want to do this, then you know your finances and how to deal with it. I wouldn't want to do it, and I would more likely take the new place and just move on to another job in a different city.

I would rather trust my school without 5 million than a landlord with 5 million.

I've heard stories of foreigners having a difficult time recovering the key money at the end of the contract, especially if the landlord knows that their visa is expiring (which they will when you sign the contract). 5 million won is a ton of money to entrust to someone when you are unaware of the customs of Korea, and there is a huge language barrier, and of course, you're not Korean, so you'll always be the looser in a legal battle.
I know some people who have rented, were extremely happy, and had their key money returned to them with no problems. It's the few that loose such a large sum of money that scares me. Good luck!.

Oh- and if you work for PS you don't have much option.. Unless you choose the housing allowance at the beginning of the contract, you can't change your mind.

Thanks folks.

Not planning on wild parties but I'm a private person and my girlfriend would be staying over at weekends and I don't want to be getting looks from the principal because she heard about it. It's none of her business, but they're quite Christian in this country as you all well know.

There's no guarantee that she'd hear about it, but I wouldn't feel 100% comfortable staying in an apartment that closely linked to the school.

Will either stay put or ask the school to move me to another apartment that doesn't belong to a friend of the pricipal.
