I accepted a PS gig through GEPIK. The job starts in August. But seeing
I'm coming back 2 months early. I want to see friends, backpack, go places
I always wanted to go.

But....now the school is telling me that there is a provision that states if I arrive earlier than 1 month before the contract date they don't have to reimburse me for my airfare.

I have never heard of such a thing. Is this true?

If they want to be that way about it, go for the month, ask for reimbursement. Obviously, they will say no. Wait a week or more if you can afford it. Then cancel the contract and sign on with another school. They will be out a teacher and have to find someone in the country quickly.

I had to do something similar. I only had 2 weeks before my visa expired, and the second school played similar games. I got another school and immigration kept the new visa and simply changed the location of workplace to the third school. Just make sure you do this before the contract period for the new year starts.

this is a common rule, as schools don't feel the need to risk paying for people to come over here and vacation for a few months then head right back home.

cancelling out of the contract as koreatimes is suggesting is completely immature, unethical and one of the many reasons why teachers get such a bad rap here.

think about why they wouldn't want to pay for you to come 2 months early. then, read your contract and note the stipulation. if it is there then you should honor the contract you accepted and face the repercussions of your actions, intended or unintended, like a decent person.

Did you enter Korea using the employment visa or as a tourist with proof of onward travel out of the country?

I'd ask them to show me the actual legislation that provides for such an action on their part. The latest contracts I've seen, though, do provide for a time and destination limits on getting travel pay upon completion of the contract, not before beginning the thing.

Like C.C. said, definitely go over the contract and get an answer from a higher source (not just the school). You may also want to ask the labor board if this is legal.

Wishful: There are contractual agreements that if an employee does leave early, the employee must pay back the plane ticket (usually simply deducted from the paycheck).

It looks like the school will be saving a cool 1.2 million won. Now the school's conference room, lobby, and nurse's room (Principal Choi's apartment) Cool can get the new wall paper and lighting (chandelier) Mrs. Choi has been nagging about for the past 3 months.

Your school is negotiating with a gun filled with blanks.

The schools will try a lot not to pay you. Go to the place to get free legal counseling. There are posts on it in Dave's. Ask them what is true and not true. Then your school can't force you into letting them take advantage of you.

I thought the labor board had nothing to do with airfare?

They can be involved if the school is in violation of the stipulations of the contract. I doubt you'd be able to do anything about it unless you were actually in Korea, mind you.
