Hello Everyone,
Just a quick question: If I get a job offer, can I bring my boyfriend with me who is NOT teaching? Moreover, realistically what kind of non-teaching work can an American get (he works in construction).
Thanks for any responses |

He could come on a tourist visa and do visa runs every three months. I've met people who have done this for a long time without issue.
As for work, he can't work legally, and I'm guessing there's pretty much zero chance he'd be able to find anything in construction anyway. |

You CAN bring your BF, but you'll go broke keeping him in Korea. He'll need to fly/boat out of Korea to renew his tourist visa every few months. And there is no guarantee that immi will ALWAYS let him back in.
Your boyfriend CANNOT legally hold any job on a tourist's visa.
I'm building a house, so send me an email or PM me. |

so are you denying her the right to bring her boyfriend here?
OP, the truth is you CAN bring him here, but he can't 'legally' work on a tourist visa. so i would look into other visas that are available for other kinds of jobs. |

I'm pretty sure any job you're going to get without a degree is going to pay about 4,000 an hour. |

You can bring a suitcase or a puppy too. The question is, how do we understand the meaning of "bring". I understood it as wanting to support/sponsor her significant other. in that case, her "rights" are somewhat limited. And it's not about me denying them, it's about how Korean Immigration structures its Dependents clauses.
If you want to take it literally, she could "bring" this person to pretty much anywhere on the planet. |

I would say he would find it hard if he is not specialized (and qualified) in a particular field. Construction is a pretty vague term but he would most likely have to have a skill set that can't be found locally. If he has something to offer then a company can sponsor his visa.
If hes just joe builder, crane driver, electrician, a common tradesman then he will find it really hard if he doesn't speak Korean.
I know a few trades have work exchange programs but that also depends on where your from and what you do.
Good luck with what ever you decide. |

Hey Everyone,
THANK YOU for all of your prompt replies. I have been considering taking the leap and trying teaching in Korea for at least a year now (yes, last year I stalked these forums) and have become re-inspired. Just trying to see what is "realistic" as for a "plan" and "option". Trying to make solid and smart decisions. Thanks again everyone. He and I will be seriously discussing this. Perhaps I can convince him to get certified.
Be well. |

What do you mean by "get certified"? If he lacks a degree he won't be getting a visa. |
