I have some relatively basic questions about leaving SK with a dog and I think I may not be the only one.

1) MY dog is a Jindo-look alike puppy. My vet is willing to back me up on it's nonpedigree, so that isn't an issue.
I am curious as to what happens with puppies who have just recieved their rabies vaccinations. Does anyone know exactly what happens? I don't know much Korean but from what I could gather, Korean officials would translate MY rabies vaccination papers into English. Is this correct?

2) About how long were you at the airport before your flight left? I want to know this well in advance as i will be flying from Busan-Incheon (yes, asiana does that route early in the morning) but don't want to have to feel rushed as my dog leaves with me. I mean, i'm thinking I could possibly get hassled for her lack of a pedigree.
Basically, if there are hassles, how early should i be, OR if it goes smoothely, how much time will i need?

3) anyone travelled with a dog that had to go in cargo? Do you know if you could go and see your dog during the flight?

4) How much would it cost to fly the dog from busan to seoul? ANY guess at all will be helpful as korean air carrier websites are just about as useful as a fart in a windstorm.

5) unrelated: how much is the typical upgrade to first class...i'm guessing around 250-300$ sound right? I figure, if my dog has to travel in horrid comfort, why can't i live it up?

thanks in advance

thanks...

Hey, we are bringing our dog back home from Korea next month so have looked into the answers to most of your questions if, thatis, you can answer some of my questions...they are important - -

Where are you flying too? (This is important because different countries have different regulations for bringing pets into the country)

What airline are you flying on (outside of Korea)?

As per the cost of your dog on Domestic flights (1,500/kg) - - so it all depends on how big your dog is and how heavy.

As far as visiting your dog DURING flight...we are flying AirCanada and you are defninetly NOT allowed to check on the animal during the flight. If your flight is with aircanada I can give you a link where you can get all of the information you will need.

Check with your travel agent regarding your questions as well. We booked our tickets through Kangsan Travel and they were very helpful in answer a number of questions we had about our dog.

This is not based on any solid information but I do not think that you will have any problems regarding the 'mutt' status of your dog if you have all of the correct paperwork in place.

The vet will issue the correct documents BUT make sure that they are in both Korean and English (korean for here - - english for home). We have to go to two seperate vets because the one we normally deal with doesn't speak very good english.

Anyway hope some of this information is helpful. PM me the answers to my questions and I will send you the links. (If your flying to Canada there is also a website to check out).

Cheers and Happy travels,

I have traveled to the United States with my dog, a yorkshire terrier I bought in Korea, three times. Each time my dog flew on the plane with me. I recommend it if your dog is still a puppy. I think the limit for the dog plus kennel can not be over eight kilograms. The fee was 75-100,000 won depending on the carrier.

As for the paperwork, you do need one in Korean and on in English. It took about thirty minutes at the quarantine office but I was always there early and there was never anyone else waiting. Actually the officer never looks at the dog other than seeing her standing there on the lease. They do not seem interested in anything but the paperwork.

As for arriving in the United States, hopefully the procedure has changed, but as I went through immigration, they asked, "What is in the bag?" I said my dog and they said ok and passed me through. Did not check my paperwork or look to see if it was actually a dog. This happened each time. I have always come back to Korea carrying my original English paperwork. Returning to Korea was also never a problem. They checked the paperwork I had taken out of Korea and passed my dog through in less than five minutes.

Does anyone know what the Canadian laws are for quarantine? I've been dying to get a dog, but I heard the quarantine was six months and thought that unusually cruel. Thanks for your help,
J

There is currently no quarantine for pets (dogs/cats) going into Canada. All you need is the proper papers showing proof of rabies vaccination. Check this website out (government of Canada current regulations):

http://www.inspection.gc.ca/english/anima/heasan/import/dogse.shtml

Should give you all the information you need...

Cheers,

Cool. One more reason not to trust what most people tell you, but to go to the sourse. I wasn't getting a dog because I thought that there was quarantine.

Now I have to consider apartment plus dog equals what?????

thanks for the tips... but a lot of this information is not new to me.
I was aware there was no quarrunteen.
I am travelling to the vanc. with ac I think, but i know about those costs. (2x the excess baggage=260,000W+)

next, the problem isn't simply leaving with a dog, but leaving with a dog that looks "a lot" like a jindo, keeps getting confused with a jindo EVERYWHERE we go; a vet and the previous owner who have no real way of tracing the pedigree; and some possibly anal retentive customs agents.

as for bringing pets to Canada (for everyone): So long as the animal (talking dog) has had it's rabies vaccinations, it's safe to bring in for a nominal fee (i think 35$? yes?). If it has NOT been vaccinated then it is given a time frame in which the animal MUST go to a government registered vet to get the shot (ONLY rabies is the issue).

Thanks for the info on the domestic flight...the puppy is (i believe) 6kg plus the carrier (this monstrous thing that i got due to loack of communications)....oh well, at least i won't have to buy one at the end of summer for the next trip!

I've been to the AC website but it never said anything in regards to seeing one's pet.

thanks for the tips re: the paperwork. I'm gonna get a teacher to fill in the paperwork for me an talk to the school about my ticket

I think first class is about double economy fare.
