I have a grammar question related to the following sentence that I hope someone can help out with.

Teenagers begin to go out on dates like to the movies.

It sounds OK to me, but is there a grammar problem with the underlined
part?

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

'Like' as a preposition is normally followed by a noun, pronoun or gerund.

He eats lots of green vegetables, like spinach
I'm good at tennis, like him.
I want to do something peaceful, like reading a book.

So your sentence should read

Teenagers begin to go out on dates, like going to the movies.

Teenagers begin to go out on dates like to the movies.

That is not a correct sentence. It sounds like the second half of a compound sentence such as: When high school students get a drivers license, they like to go on dates to the movies.

But, that sentence should be:

Teenagers like to go on dates to the movies. or,
Teenagers begin to go out on dates when they find a partner.

It's just an awkward sentence overall...

sounds ok to me if I'm Beavis, Butthead, or a California valley girl.
or a Ms. Teen USA beauty contestant (was she from NC?)

as an educator, or someone involved in education it's worse than fingernails on a chalkboard. So tortured and yes, incorrect. (see williamsabia), though I'd accept it with that comma (while expecting something better from an aspiring student)

here's a native speaker speaking English that is "correct" (according to linguists..) because she's a native speaker
