Korean bloggers have been selling defective products without disclosing that they were being paid by companies or that they were receiving commissions.

The incident has stirred a heated debate in Korea over issues that range from the morality of bloggers and the companies that use blogs to promote their products, the responsibilities of Web portals, and the lack of laws to punish bloggers like Hyeon.

Kang is right because under current law, no one has to take responsibility. Bloggers are not registered businesses, nor do they make direct sales - or at least that is the way that was supposed to be, although Hyeon proved otherwise.
Furthermore, bloggers who put up postings and reviews with commercial or promotional intent and who receive commissions are merely frowned upon. Under current regulations, theyve done nothing wrong.
But that may change. The National Tax Service has said it plans to strengthen monitoring of power blogs and their sales activities. It is currently collecting data and said it may someday launch a tax investigation.
If someone failed to register as a business and made profits, the person is subject to a tax investigation, a NTS official told Korean media. As blogs with commercial intent are increasing exponentially, NTS should investigate accordingly.
The Fair Trade Commission - the countrys antitrust agency - also said it has launched a legal examination to see if activities like Hyeons selling of the cleaner go against current advertising and labelling laws.

Do they need to investigate some expat bloggers for receiving free gifts or money from restaurants or businesses without reporting it? Maybe not because they are small potatoes in Korea but once the Korean Tax office changes regulations they will have to disclose these things. |

If you read the article you will see that we're not talking about ads. These bloggers are presenting themselves as unbiased sources of information for consumers. Instead they are being bought and sold by companies. They are also making sales and commissions without declaring it on their taxes. Sounds more like fraud. |
