I tend to see crime as a socio-economic issue. Poor people commit crimes. Prisons are diverse but almost all share the same background. Under-educated, dysfunctional family, etc.
I think if we want to solve the crime problem. We need to do a few things. First education. People who have hope based on a decent K-12 education tend not to commit crimes. The fact is that the K-12 educational system for many African Americans in these high crime areas are....well, criminal, for lack of a better word.
Second, the war on drugs is a joke. Third, change or eliminate programs that break up the family unit. The manner in which social welfare is dispensed in some cases replaces the father with the government. The Moynihan report on this issue many years ago suggested that much be done to structure social welfare that keeps the family unit intact. Almost the opposite was enacted. Enough said on that. There are other things that need to change but those three alone would put a serious dent on not only the African American crime rate but all violent crime. High unemployment gets a lot of blame but if you're educated sufficiently and have employable skills even in times of high unemployment you tend not to revert to crime, sell drugs or use drugs as an escape. |
I am not sure I see it simply as a socio-economic issue. The crime rate amongst African Americans is higher than that of Hispanics and impoverished Caucasians from what I understand. What is missing? Poor Caucasians and Hispanics didn't deal with Selma, Alabama, and being enslaved. Granted, poverty does contribute to crime. It's not about race since this does not fit with most African-Americans and African Americans do not represent all black people, they represent those who were uprooted and brought to America. Another people who suffered immensely were the Native Americans. Though there were addictive substances before the white man came, few natives were addicted to anything. Too many African-Americans have not recovered from the cultural damage of slavery and Jim Crowe. That's my take, but people do not want to hear about the past. We can't live in the past and live on excuses. We need hard work and solutions for all Americans.
I definitely agree with you regarding abandoning the war on drugs. Parts of African American society, especially, and also people of all backgrounds and races often get sucked into the poison of drugs and putting people in jail victimizes people who have already been victims. The reality is some groups like Native Americans and African Americans have amongst their numbers, people who feel they are wounded and blame the victimization from history for their situation. It's true that's what partially created the mess, but we cannot allow the tyranny of the past to be a tyranny in the present.
A major key is education. We must do everything in our power to make sure the kids are attending regularly, they are in safe schools, and teachers get support. If we stress education and ensure people get one that is decent, we will solve many problems, IMHO. |

In the mid to late 1800s you could make the same claim about Irish Americans. In NY, they committed about 60 -70 percent of all crime in NYC for about 40 years roughly from 1840s to 1880.
Totally agree that the black crime is at a much higher rate and is too high. The black middle class and upper middle class is climbing (or was till this latest economic downturn) at a much higher rate than other groups. Espcially in the '90s and '90s.
What's also interesting is the white crime rate exceeds all industrialized nations as well. Why? The high level of poverty can partially explain African American crime rate. Poverty is no excuse in my book but there is almost always a correlation in just about any nation or society between income levels and crime. As I said poor people commit violent crime.
Education. A sane drug policy. Those two things alone could cut ALL violent crime significantly. |

Another story:

Bears rookie J.T. Thomas takes young lady to eighth-grade dance
J.T. Thomas was drafted in the sixth round by the Chicago Bears, but the lockout leaves him without much to do right now. The athletic, hard-hitting linebacker out of West Virginia University is still in Morgantown, keeping in shape and spending time with his family.
Every day, Thomas helps his 7-year-old brother Jared get home from school. Riding the same bus as Jared is an eighth-grade girl named Joslyn Levell, who happened to grow up in Chicago as a Bears fan and now lives in Morgantown. Joslyn has spina bifida and uses a wheelchair.
With assists from the bus driver and J.T.'s stepmother, Thomas got on the bus one day to say hello to Joslyn. They hit it off immediately.
From NFL.com:
As J.T. met a Bears fan in his hometown, Joslyn explained to him that she'd had a rough week because all of the boys she asked to the dance declined. Thomas melted.
"I hugged her and signed a few things and we talked for awhile and she cried a bit," Thomas recounted. "I gave her a hug and told her everything would work itself out."
It did. J.T. asked her to the dance himself.
"I was nervous that by the time I reached out, she might have had a date and would have to turn me down," he said.
Joslyn gladly accepted the invitation.
"After so many people turned me down, this was so big especially, because he asked me instead of me asking him," she said.
How'd the evening go? Check out some of Thomas' tweets from that evening:
Can't wait to hit the prom tonite at Suncrest Middle School
I wonder who's gonna DJ tonite at Suncrest Middle
Why am I getting nervous for an 8th grade prom??
At Suncrest Middle 8th grade dance...it's jumpin in here!!!
The DJ is slowin it down...couples only!!
Joslyn later said it was the best night of her life.
Thomas intends for his new friendship to continue, too. If things work out for him in Chicago, he said he'd love to bring Joslyn and his family back to Chicago to see him play for the Bears.

Seriously, everytime I think you can't post anything MORE stupid (I believe the proper term is stupider, not MORE stupid), you prove me wrong. Exactly how many POSITIVE stories do you see in this forum, if ever?
Usually the posts here are of a government-global context with the exception of yours. What's more, you rarely post anything positive unless it feeds your ego.
You're trying to assign some racist motivation where there isn't any. Pretty lame stretch, even by your standards. And what's funnier is that I did not mention race whatsoever. You're the one who decided that these guys must be black.

Perhaps.. Lets take a look at what you posted during the past month

I'm sorry if my observation of your bigoted postings offends you. Please, try to calm down and learn that people with dark skin are not evil. People that aren't wealthy are not bad. I am, however, glad to see you are intellectually dissecting my posts!
Sorry for going a little off topic. |

See, there is still good news out there
http://highschool.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1237085
The event - a foul-shooting contest for top academic students at Compton
High School in Los Angeles - was created with a simple premise: Organizers wanted to show the kids at Compton how to create community spirit with college scholarship money as the incentive.
Allen Geui won in front of a packed house.
Following a tear-jerking gesture from the winner - it appears the true lessons learned were by the adults.
The kids in Compton are more than alright.
Three months after winning the $40,000 top prize, Allan Guei donated all of his winnings to the seven other finalists.
Guei, a star player on the basketball team who is headed to Cal-State Northridge on a full scholarship, said he felt the others could use the college cash more than he could. He wanted to give his classmates a chance to make their academic dreams come true, too.
"I've already been blessed so much and I know we're living with a bad economy, so I know this money can really help my classmates," he said in a release from the school. "It was the right decision." |

Steelers coach sells Mercedes to team cafeteria worker for $20
On his final day in Pittsburgh before taking over as defensive coordinator for the Arizona Cardinals, Ray Horton gave his 1999 Mercedes SL500 to cafeteria worker Maurice Matthews.
The cook had always kidded around with Horton, telling him he was coaching his position and asking when he'd be allowed to drive his sports car. Horton would jokingly reply, "you can't afford the gas in it."
But on his final day in Pittsburgh, Horton approached Matthews to say goodbye and asked if he could borrow whatever money he had in his pocket. When Matthews handed over a twenty, Horton said "sold for $20!" and handed him the keys to his car.
"Ray said, 'Hey, you always liked the car, you're a good dude, I know you'll take care of it," Matthews told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "It's yours."
The next day he drove Horton to the airport and received all the paperwork to take ownership of the car. With 64,000 miles on it, Matthews ended up paying $20 for a vehicle that carries a Kelly Blue Book value of $17,735.
"It's just taking care of guys who took care of you," Horton told the Arizona Cardinals team blog.
The Cardinals got a good man. And cafeteria workers in Tempe just found their new favorite customer. |
