I second Smarter Subway. Best subway app for Android, although an even better one exists for iPhone Crying or Very sad My Galaxy also came with a better than decent subway app hidden away on the SD card; you had to manually install it with a file manager. No idea why they hid it away.

The best bus app is of course still SeoulBus but they urgently need a database update to account for the "new" 6060 bus that races from Itaewon to the airport.

Here's what's running on my Galaxy today: http://www.appbrain.com/user/orosee/current-20110301

No idea about the T-Store; I have "borrowed" a Korean friend's number so my ARC doesn't match the registered user. Everything I got is from the normal market, using Market Enabler in case of games and some Google apps that are banned in Korea.

My girlfriend (or ex-girlfriend; I don't understand that woman and her moods!) cracked her gorilla screen within hours of getting the phone. She got a free replacement at Samsung aftersales (somewhere downtown?) and a stern reminder to be more careful.

Complete change of topic: Why do most headphones have the control/mic knob so close to the earpiece? That silly knob always gets stuck on my shirt collar, pulling the plug out of my ear! I wish there was an easy way to remove the thing.

Has anyone rooted successfully with the new firmware update? Been reading around for a couple hours now and the amount of information out there is just staggering.

Ok, I figured it out, just took me some time. Tried SuperOneClick, but with no luck. This worked though...

Found a guide here:

http://www.symbianize.com/showthread.php?p=6925424

Downloaded the files required here and here:

http://ig33k.portzilla.com/2011/02/odin-1-3-download/

http://www.4shared.com/get/ZQ2d0wgJ/Tegrak-Kernel-Build-24-for-M11.html (was a lot easier for me to download this using a torrent client)

Followed the guide from there and all went well. (this is for those with VF24 by the way)

It does seem much snappier now....
Now figuring out what else I can do

Well, finicky KIES is at it again...

I previously posted that I had KIES running fine on my Netbook with XP. I saw that the newest Gingerbread update is available, so I connected the phone and tried the update.

When I started KIES, it said I needed to update KIES to the newest version, which I did. Connected my phone, no problems. Did a back up of contacts, pics, etc, and then proceeded to the firmware update.

The update downloads fine, but as soon as it starts downloading, the phone gets disconnected from KIES. Once the download is complete, it appears like the program isn't even trying to connect to the phone, but after 10 minutes or so, I get a message saying the computer failed to find the device. It suggests unplugging the cable, removing the battery, restarting the phone and reconnecting the cable to complete the update. I tried that, but no luck. The only way to get the computer to recognize my device again is to restart KIES. However, every time I do that, I'm back to square 1 and have to re-download the firmware update, and have the same problem.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling both KIES and the USB drivers, but nothing seems to work. My best guess is that the latest update to KIES is to blame, but I can't get the newest firmware update unless I upgrade.

Any thoughts / suggestions?

I had that problem too, many times. In the past I did many things to try and fix it, up to a complete factory reset and SD card format. Eventually it worked, but I was never sure why.

This time I only did the following (I've been running on Tegrak's kernels for a while now):

- unlagfix (I'm just using the basic LF, not ONENAND)
- choose a "tighter" USB port (my computer has 2 primary and 1 secondary)

And then.... it just worked.

I heard many times that the USB port can cause problems with KIES (it never seems to cause problems with 3rd party software or even the USB mode of the phone).

Maybe you try and go from there... do you have a "virgin tight" USB port with steady power?

Thanks a lot for that... My phone went from the 1400 range to 2339 on quadrant. Nice.

After the predictable mighty struggle with KIES (it actually turned off my PC at one point. No prompt box. Just turned off my computer on its own) I eventually got this update.

Quadrant score is up to around 1800.....

I eventually got the update to work by installing KIES on my wife's computer and updating from there. Worked like a charm the first try. Good lord, I hate that piece of software.

same problem here! makes u wonder if its such a common problem did they even bother to test run this thing.

finally updated. in the end i switched off my computer. switched off my fone and took the battery out for a few seconds then rebooted everything. worked for me after that. quadrant score 1399.

i think its about time i rooted this. are there any drawbacks to rooting? can u still use the device to tether? etc

in the rooting guide it says not to run kies but i updated already to vf24 through kies (didnt see this guide til after i'd updated). does this make a difference? will it cause problems for rooting?

also in the guide at this point

9. Locate the VF24 = M110S-Gingerbread-HOME-IMAGE-REV03-VF24-1618_CL319686-USER.tar

ive no idea what that even means...ive downloaded odin 1.3 and the tegrak kernel files. do i need to download this or is it located somwhere on the phone?.

I'm not sure about the terminology and all, but I think you're set to go.

I had updated through KIES prior to the install and just made sure KIES wasn't running when I went through the install process.

Everything is working fine.

The .tar file is the Tegrak file you downloaded. I had to rename it as Odin didn't recognize it. I just added a .tar to the end of the filename.

i dont think thats right mate because of this (at top of guide page) :

Requirements:

1. Computer
2. USB Cable for Galaxy S
3 ODIN 1.3
4. ROM (VF24 = M110S-Gingerbread-HOME-IMAGE-REV03-VF24-1618_CL319686-USER)
5. Kernel (Tegrak-Kernel-Build-24-for-M110S-VF24)

thats suggesting to me a seperate rom file to the tegrak tar file. what u think?
