| How long will it take GEPIK to admit to this change in the hiring policy and let us know the truth? Or will they let the rumor mill work OT, once again, while only friends of friends know what is really going on? |

| These days I pray at my church to bring down and to destroy GEPIK. I'm not joking. |

because, let's be fair, there have been many rumors about gepik flying around this board for years that have proven to be inaccurate or at least somewhat inaccurate.
when they're ready to make it "official", they will. |

I agree and that's why they should regularly communicate with the foreign teachers in the GEPIK program. But they don't, and that's why the rumor mill becomes so powerful. And then, all too often, they tell their pals and not everyone else. |

And exactly how much do they benefit from keeping the English teacher in the dark? I feel like a lot of headaches would be avoided (for GEPIK and the teacher) if they were more transparent about rules.
Not publicly listing the schools that are eligible for the rural bonus is openly admitting that you're willing to let schools lie to their teachers.
I wont say that I wouldnt get mad if GEPIK were most honest (with the bad news) but I would appreciate that at least I know whats happening. |

ft's ask too many logical (dumb) questions and they don't want to deal with that. |

The vagueness as a whole does not benefit anyone. It only services incompetent bureaucrats seeking to line their own pockets (and believe it, they do)

They were never in our corner to begin with. Even when they do state the rules- schools will break them because they fear no repercussions.

We all would. However when you look at the figurehead *COUGH CANT SAY HER NAME BUT HAS INITIALS 'D' and 'B' COUGH* and how the organization backs the FT when we have legitimate problems... speaking for myself I'm not surprised. Clarity also means some of your regional overseers won't have jobs (which they don't really 'work' at anyway). I could go on but you get the point. |

so long as you realize "she" has no power whatsoever, and is merely a figurehead. She receives her marching orders from the bureaucrats above and goes about coordinating implementing them. |

| The MOE is paying to send younger public school English teachers abroad to the United States for one year to study in community colleges to improve their English in an immersion environment. After that they will have a competent English teacher for life instead of having to pay for plane tickets to and from the U.S. (or other Western country) year after year to fly in NETs. |
I have seen that several US universities have made TESOL degrees and certificate programs designed specifically for Korean English teachers. These are four-year universities. We all know that two year programs are not as academically rigorous. Koreans respect education, so why would they send their teachers to a less rigorous academic environment?
The problem about an "immersion" environment is that most Koreans, while abroad, stay in ethnic enclave societies, i.e. "Korea Towns," rather than truly becoming immersed. This is a huge problem that needs to be overcome for Korea to have truly qualified teachers.
There is an additional issue that must be addressed. Only a year abroad is not enough to pick up on the subtleties of a language. They will still have to hire foreign teachers for this.
I highly doubt that MOE will achieve its goal of making "qualified Korean teachers." Their plan, according solely to the information provided in the quoted post, is not sufficiently thought out. However, with some of the noted changes above, MOE could achieve positive results. But they won't listen to a waygookin. |

you have to admit that k-teachers who have travelled overseas to study are far better teachers than those who have not.
my two assistants were sent to the u.s. for 6 months. when they returned, i noticed significant improvement in their fluency and confidence in english. they've become more eager to learn from me.

The Education as well as the Employment pendulum swings in pretty predictable ranges. During Economic "fat" times people don't mind investing in Education as a form of self-enrichment or for time-structuring (IE. "professional students"). These are times that can produce some pretty nice advancements in R&D. When times get hard and the money is tight, people start asking about the best "bang for the buck" and whether what they are learning will convert into bigger paychecks for the investment they are making. Educational Institutions are no different.
Right now there is a huge marketing campaign on day-time TV replete with SUGGESTIONS about how taking this or that course of studies will "further a career". At the same time institutions are cutting classes and teaching staff for all but those classes that garner large enrollment numbers. I'm not surprised at all to hear that policies are changing in Korea since tight money means more accountability and the need to demonstrate that folks are actually getting measureable gain for the money being spent.
A.) Look for increased use of pre-packaged programs with tie-ins to one-on-one SKYPE support.
B.) Look for competency testing that allows individuals to profficiency entry requirements at various levels.
C.) Look for increased engagement by Industries and professions in producing programs tailored to their agendas.
D.) Look for increased calls for standardization among independent schools as well as voucher systems for parents.
E.) Look for incorporation of English into multi-language programs.
In general the transition you will see---speaking very loosely--- is the shift from education sponsored by the government to education sponsored by the private sector. The difference is that the private sector expects results.
FWIW.
Best Wishes,
Bruce |
