in the rooting guide it says not to run kies but i updated already to vf24 through kies (didnt see this guide til after i'd updated). does this make a difference? will it cause problems for rooting?
also in the guide at this point
9. Locate the VF24 = M110S-Gingerbread-HOME-IMAGE-REV03-VF24-1618_CL319686-USER.tar
ive no idea what that even means...ive downloaded odin 1.3 and the tegrak kernel files. do i need to download this or is it located somwhere on the phone?. |
I'm not sure about the terminology and all, but I think you're set to go.
I had updated through KIES prior to the install and just made sure KIES wasn't running when I went through the install process.
Everything is working fine.
The .tar file is the Tegrak file you downloaded. I had to rename it as Odin didn't recognize it. I just added a .tar to the end of the filename. |
i dont think thats right mate because of this (at top of guide page) :
Requirements:
1. Computer
2. USB Cable for Galaxy S
3 ODIN 1.3
4. ROM (VF24 = M110S-Gingerbread-HOME-IMAGE-REV03-VF24-1618_CL319686-USER)
5. Kernel (Tegrak-Kernel-Build-24-for-M110S-VF24)
thats suggesting to me a seperate rom file to the tegrak tar file. what u think? |
From what i understand, the ROM just seems to be the name for the software. Some people make their own, to modify the look of the system. I think the official update through KIES uses that same file. It's just been uploaded separately so that people can load it without using KIES.
I skipped the ROM part myself, as I'd already gotten the update through KIES.
Here's a forum that discusses our model:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=772718&page=270
It's where i found the link to the Tegrak kernel.
Here's an explanation of what a ROM is:
http://forum.androidcentral.com/hacking/6037-general-rom-faq.html
Didn't have time to read it so I don't know if it jives with what I said before or not... |

If you already updated to 2.3.4, then you don't need the VF24 firmware file. Only Odin and the Tegrak kernel file. If you haven't updated yet, then I guess you could use it, but I would be more comfortable updating through Kies. That is what I did, and it worked fine for me. |

If you use tegraks lagfix I would sugest not to use onenand mode..
Once in that mode you can't undo the lagfix. ;~( It says not enough memory even though I didn't instal anything after the lagfix.. |

VG14 is already out (isn't it just a few short weeks since the VF went live?).
Tegrak has Kernel v25 for both the VF and the VG firmware. |

The strangest thing is that since I switched USB ports on my computer (I got a "tight-fit" one and a wobbly one which is more convenient to use), I have never had any problems using KIES (apart from throwing up a little in my mouth). The last 3 F/W updates went smoothly and without a hitch, interruption or disaster.
The wobbly port works very well for any other application that needs a USB connection, the only difference is with KIES. So there's enough left to blame.
I just did a casual and relaxed F/W update, kernel switch and root in under 30 minutes.
As with the previous update, I have zero clues as to what has changed, or if anything has. |

use the port you used last time. I think devices drivers are always installed for one particular port and if you want to use some other USB port you have to install the device drivers for it again. |

| I have the tegrak kernel v24 already installed. I just uninstalled the lagfix. Do I also have to uninstall the kernel before updating to VG14 in Kies? Or will using Kies automatically overwrite the tegrak kernel? |
