hi all,
if any of the forum experts could please advise...
is is standard practice for korean hagwon teachers to get 2 weeks holidays (in addition to public holidays) in their contracts?

| i'd say most korean hakwon workers would be lucky to get around ten days - being split over the two vacations. i do some part-time work at a company where the two guys i teach have been there for 22 and 25 years. even though they're entitled to close to 30 days yearly(including national holidays, company leave/vacation days, sick days, and yearly calendar adjustment), the two of them will likely take no more than four weekdays off in a row in august. korean diligence... |

hope i didn't confuse anyone....i meant the koreans at hagwons not the foreigners (USA, UK etc)
is it standard practice for korean hagwon teachers to get 2 weeks holidays (in addition to public holidays) in their contracts? |

Generally, Korean hogwan teachers do not have written contracts. They are employed "at will," as most of the Foreign teachers who come here were in their previous jobs (if any) in their home countries.
The Korean hogwan teachers get the same vacation schedule as the Foreign teachers in most hogwans. This means that the school closes for vacation and everyone has a week off - students, staff, teachers - twice per year - once in summer around the end of July or beginning of August and once in winter around Christmas.
It is another question as to whether this will be a paid vacation. At some hogwans the Korean staff and teachers will not be paid for these days off, even though the foreign teachers are paid. |

| ontheway is correct. I was employed for 2 years as an English teacher before I came here. I was employed on a casual contract that was rolled over. my hours were constantly changed and I was just let go at the end of semester at one school with no warning. But I did manage to get regular work from one hagwon which I kept till I came here. I got my 20 work days vacation though it was spread out to fit into the semester breaks at our school. still, after 12 weeks teaching I needed a break anyway. |

| notice i said UP TO. ontheway is correct, in that whatever time they get off is the same as a foreign teacher. whether or not they get paid for it is a completely different story. |
