It's been a while since I've been to Japan but a good rule of thumb is to make a reasonable estimate and then take double. So, if you figured on $100/day, take $200/day (whatever that is in yen). That country is crazy expensive. |

I've been to Japan 3 times. Yea, insanely expensive country.
You can make it on $100 a day. Most of your money will be going towards transportation. The fukuoka subway is something like $2 a ride, and it adds up quick. I stayed in an internet cafe there which I HIGHLY recommend. It was something like $23, you get a nice little private cubicle to sleep in, there's a shower, and it's free non-alcoholic beverages. Definitely recommended.
PS: If you actually plan on DOING stuff, as in a vacation, I'd recommend $200 day like the other guy |

If you're drinking, you'll need a fair chunk. At least $100 a day.
If all you're doing is walking around and eating, $100 a day will be way more than enough. Bring it to be safe, though. There's a Subway shop in the Tenjin area, tons of other cheapish eats floating around of varying healthiness. Be sure to pick up a Fukuoka Now if you see one, it has a map and ads for various places to eat/drink. |

I don't know about Fukuoka, but I went to Tokyo last summer. I didn't spend that much money a day. I had a subway card, always cheaper than paying each ride. I walked around a lot and explored, visited parks, museums, etc. I ate at subway and local corner noodle shops. I prob spent 500 to 600 yen a meal, some convenience store snacks and lots of water (as it's hot in summer time). I know I didn't spend 100 bucks a day, unless you're counting hotel expenses. I went on expedia and got a last minute discount for flight and hotel at the last minute, maybe 1500 bucks. I was there for 9 or 10 days, can't remember. But actually spending, didn't cost much, except for when I bought some souveniers. Some I got cheap. Went to dollar store there and sent home some hello kitty stuff for my family. (If they only knew. Ha ha.) Ironically stocked up on western items ive been missing and couldn't find in korea and some cool japanese snacks. If you see a chocolate bar with a cartoon of a guy doing karate on the packaging, buy it. It's delicious. Also at McDonalds, the Teriyaki McBurger is good. Noodle shops are on every corner. Ask the hotel clerk what type of noodles are recommended and for them to write it in japanese. Show the noodle clerk and order. (I recommend the one that give a side order of curry rice and beef. Good, not like the curry rice here.) Good luck. |

Its insane how much money I spend in Fukuoka without even thinking about it. If you spend your evening much like you would in Korea you can easialy spend 100,000 won in an evening of food and drinks.
Last time I went to a dart bar and they charged me 1200 yen just to sit at a table before drinks. I spent 20,000 won at the arcade in only 20 minutes.
Time before that I met a guy on the ferry and we went out drinking and clubbing and I spent over 250,000 won in one night.
Before that time I met a J-chick and we went on a date and again the night's tally was over 250,000 won, but at least I got laid^^
However the last time I went my hotel reservations were lost and I stayed in a guesthouse. All the food was included in the price, plus wifi, and they had lots of beer for only 100 yen per can which is the same price as a bottle of water. There were also many travelers there and a group of J-guys loved drinking vodka all day and night, so there was party right there.
Just bring more than you think. You can always change it when you return. |

So what is that city like? After going to Tokyo would the place seem lame? I mean after being in Seoul, would it be like being in Gwangju (Jeollanam-do)? Also, what is the cost of a return ticket on the ferry? How do you book it? (Internet, phone, in-person?) |

It's only two days, I would just use my credit card. Why are you going to bring cash for everything you need? |

I hope you mean using his "home" credit card.
I wouldn't advise ANYONE using a Korean credit card abroad. Talk about getting beat up on high fees left and right. |

How does the ride feel? Is it smooth or do you get seasick? Is it easy to get from the ship port in Fukuoka to the nearest subway stop, hotels, etc? |

Yen 600 ~ Yen 800 for beer in the pub. Drink 10 bottles / pints of beer and you're up to about Yen 6, 000 to Yen 8, 000 for the night.
Yen 280 for a can of beer at the convenience stores or supermarkets. Drink a few cans of beer before you head out to the pubs to save money. |

beetle: it feels like you're in a plane. normal ferry: no idea.
there's a bus stop right outside the terminal, and taxis, too. it feels a little out of the way, but i'd say within about 20 minutes you're in the thick of things.
it's been a while though, so my memory is a little foggy. |

Yes, I was meaning credit card from ones home country. However, I have used a Korean debit card here in China, and I haven't seen the numbers dramatically go down due to fees.
If Japan is a completely different story, then thanks for the heads up. I'll have to exchange more yen if I go to Japan. |
