Hello everyone,

After reading some posts on this topic, I realized that EPIK might not be taking my application seriously. I applied for the August 2011 term directly with EPIK and I was applicant #2 since I applied early. I had all of my documents ready since I applied for the Spring 2011 term (I applied late and was offered a Daegu position which I refused). I mailed all required documents on time (late April) and I even completed an online TEFL course in January 2011. Recently, the EPIK coordinator told me that SMOE rejected my application. Even worse, I have not heard back yet regarding my other preference locations such as Incheon, Daejeon and Busan. First come first serve is obviously false advertisement and I am getting worried because these posts mention that positions have already been offered (Seoul and other provinces).

Anyone else in the same boat or have experience with this?

Did you have to do another interview for the August 2011 intake? When did EPIK receive all your paperwork? It's weird that they received all your paperwork very early but just told you that your documents were rejected :/

Yeah, I had to interview again with a different guy. They had 90% of my documents in their office since I applied for the March 2011 term. So I was good to go BEFORE April 1 2011.

I was told by my EPIK coordinator that SMOE might be looking for a higher gpa (mine was a 2.8 from a University of California) and more teaching experience (I only have 1-on-1 private tutoring experience). There is nothing wrong with the documents I mailed since they kept most of what I sent them when I applied for the March 2011 term. The last thing my EPIK coord. had me send is an Incheon Security Deposit Form for the housing situation (since I picked Incheon as my 2nd preference, Seoul as my first). Anyways, I just wish I could secure a position by now like everyone else. Thanks for reading.

What Uni did you graduate from? What was your major? did you go directly through EPIK? Sometimes that makes a difference if it's a less known Uni. When you say they kept most of what you sent, do you also mean your CBC because I know SMOE requires the CBC to be a after March one. People who had it done earlier had to request it again because SMOE would not accept it. The fact that you said no to Daegu also could have been a factor since they want people who are flexible. I'm not saying it's enough to be rejected but when you have so many applicants that are willing to say yes to anything, the no does stand out. This year, their are so many EPIK applicants it's become really competitive. I also had a 2.8-9 GPA but my interviewer didn't mention anything about my GPA being too low for SMOE :/ I did do a lot of work for non profit orgs. and was a professors assistant so i suppose that's one difference. However, it's quite impossible to figure out why provinces would reject certain applicants because people who have had lower than a 3.0 have gotten accepted to SMOE. It's still the early stages for getting NoA's and placements so don't worry too much! Sad Its sucks that you didn't get SMOE but hopefully you'll get other provinces since theirs still lots of positions left. Here's the link if you want to keep tabs on it Smile

Thanks for the link!

Ugh... They're not accepting any more application forms?! Hopefully they mean the June 1st deadline... If not, then I have not yet sent in my paper application with the required documents! I'm still waiting for my CBC. Crying or Very sad

Good luck to everyone...

Seoul is my top choice as well. I mean, I was told I got accepted to Seoul by my recruiter, but don't they have to look at my documents to make a final decision?

I am so worried... My recruiter has yet to e-mail me back about my status...

Mhmm i'm pretty sure they mean the June 1st deadline. EPIK is still telling people to send in their documents so i'm sure you'll be fine ^^
I sent all my stuff mid June and am so stressed waiting Sad Multiple people posted in the EPIK Fall 2011 group that they got rejected the past couple days for no specific reason so I'm so on edge T.T Seoul is also my first choice~

I FINALLY got my CBC check back and my documents arrived in Korea this morning. There are still 1/3 of the spots left, but I have no idea how many people are in front of me in the processing queue - so if it takes two weeks to get to my paperwork all the spots will be filled, yanno? Does anyone have any idle or semi-informed speculation on this? I'm really stressed out whether I should give the 30 days notice on moving out of my apartment or not...

I'm underemployed, so I won't qualify for a new lease. I DO NOT want to be couch surfing at my parent's house for another six months.

Yeah, I just woke up this morning to find that there's less than 1/3 of Seoul positions left. Shocked My heart dropped...

Good luck to everyone

Edit: Does anyone know if there is truth to this? I read that you can submit a state criminal record first, and submit the FBI record later. Question

It WAS true. I submitted my state's criminal check while waiting for my FBI one to come back because my recruiter said it's OK. Unfortunately, my recruiter later emailed me saying EPIK no longer accept state's criminal check to hold a place. It has to be FBI CRC with an apostille. Sad

I checked EPIK on facebook and someone said (with confidence) that "There were about 1200 applications sent to Epik/ Smoe..." Shocked Is this true? Since there are less than 1000 positions, does that mean people like me (who recently sent over all the documents) are waiting to be rejected?

So you think that google doc that epik has up is inaccurate? UGH. I need to figure out my next month's housing situation NOW. Ugh. Maybe the FB poster was talking about last year???

I don't know. I really hope I'm wrong! Crying or Very sad
The only "hopeful" conclusion that I can think of is 1200 is the number of applications EPIK received and interviewed but not the actual number of how many completed documents they received from those applicants. I hope that make sense...I guess we just have to wait and see.

This whole system they have for hiring teachers is a disaster.

I went through a recruiter who I relied on 100% and after I sent all my forms I didn't have the Sealed Transcript which she had even told me about. I was ready a month ago except for this and now I fear I have no chance at a SMOE place though I have years experience.

It really annoys me that you don't even know where you are going to be before you go. It's like being treated like a piece of meat!!!

Anyone know how to check when the SMOE places have been taken?

Will we know if we are accepted for the SMOE before we travel?

I will get a job in a Hagwon if I don't get SMOE I think

That's unfortunate that you forgot the sealed transcript but for things like this, you gotta be very anal retentive and double check that all the required documents are sent. I triple checked mine before I sent it, and my recruiter checked it as well...

Anyone got their contracts yet? when did you get the confirming email after you sent your documents?

I got my contract and NOA today, getting very excited now. My only thing holding me from sending my E-2 visa stuff to Chicago embassy is the flight itinerary. We were told that we need to go through the EPIK travel agent, but I am afraid flight costs will start to rise the closer it gets to August 16/17. Anyone else got their EPIK travel agent flight itinerary yet?

You do not need to use their travel agency. Many of us got flights on our own.

Ok thank you. Yeah I was told the EPIK travel agent was the way to go with by my recruiter, but the EPIK document that came along with my Contract and NOA stated I would have to find my own.

Are the contracts always posted to you or do they e-mail them for you to print off and then you post back?

It is always express mailed, usually with DHL, with a tracking number.
