Dugout on Hagwon-ga has a bit more of a mellow vibe, and I find it to be significantly friendlier. Pirate Bar and Jack's in Sanbon attract a decent number of foreigners as well, Jack's being the better place to meet people. It's not the easiest place to meet people if you don't have a crew already. |

I got the same vibe there... I don't think there are any other options in the Beomgye area, which is why I usually just go to Seoul.
Anyway Beomgye people PM me if you want to hang out sometime! |

In Beomgye proper there's also 10 Bar, which isn't too bad. Atlanta is cool in the summer if you can get a seat next to a window. Miller Time just opened but has promise. None of these places are mingling type foreigner joints, but they're decent bars.
The other places mentioned are either a ten minute walk (Dugout) or a 4,000 won cab ride (Pirate Bar and Jack's).
I should have mentioned: at Pirate Bar you can get your beer in a glass of ice and throw it at a target to win free drinks.
There's always Wa Bar as well if you've got some people with you, the one in Beomgye has a really nice view and it's dirt cheap.
There are about thirty bars in Beomgye, try popping in to various venues and checking them out. |

I'll admit, the concept of a foreigner bar seems weird to me. In the sense of, "We're all foreigners, and we drink, and that's what we have in common, so we go to this bar." It seems awkward, forced. Maybe it's because I'm the only foreign teacher at my school and am still not used to being among fellow foreigners in Korea?
I'm not much of a bar-goer, but I am curious to visit a pub / bar frequented by both Koreans and foreigners.
Any recommendation?
To complicate that, not being a bar-going and lacking foreigner friends, I'm actually intimidated to visit a bar alone, considering how I might be perceived for doing so. You know, I prefer not to be the great center of attention / conversation amongst strangers. What are thoughts on this? |

| Haven't lived there for years, but Anyang "first street" was always a busy place. |

I know how you feel. I live in Anyang and I'm in the same boat. I have foreign co-workers but they're big into drinking/partying/being ridiculously extroverted so I don't get on with them all that well outside of work (I'm introverted).
People always tell me to go to bars to meet people and I can't think of a way to do that which wouldn't involve being creepy. I don't even like bars.
Anyway, just hang in there. You'll meet people eventually. I made a lot of friends by going to meet ups in Seoul, like Adventure Korea and Veggie Club (for vegetarians/vegans). If you're not into those I'm sure there are more clubs. Just search around on Facebook. I remember seeing a club that just plays board games and another club that does Improv... |

Pirate Bar and Jack's in Sanbon have mixed crowds that are pretty mellow (more so than Happidus in Beomgye). Either of those places you could just walk in and chat, Jack's probably a bit more so. Sanbon is about a 4,000 won cab ride from where you live. I'm sure there's a direct bus as well, but I don't know the number. |

Sure, thanks a lot, I'll check them out. Getting there by bus is pretty easy.
Is that Pirate, as in MLB Pirates? |

Not in the least. It's Pirate as in there's a statue of a pirate outside. Generally you'll need to go to these places a bit later if you're going on a weekend, and there's no guarantee of finding any foreigners on a weeknight. |

@myenglishisno:
I joined a meetup group for hiking in Korea, but it seemed very centrally controlled by some Korean guy who every month also uses the group to recruit hagwon teachers...
I'll check out the others you mention.
In practice, I don't play board games, and I'm no longer vegetarian or vegan. But both sound good! So I'll check those out. |

Also, join the Anyang facebook group. If you post that you want to go hiking/biking/grab a meal, there are around a hundred members and someone will most likely take you up on the offer. Anyang's foreigner crowd tends to be pretty welcoming to newbies.

| Anybody know what's happening with Slang? There is a sign on the door saying 7/29 so I assume it's reopening in some capacity, but it will be under new ownership, so does anybody know if it will be the same or similar? |

According to one of my buddies, they got shut down for three months due to underage drinking. Good riddance, I say.
Also, this reminded me:

| I heard that rumor too, but I thought the one about Don and Tiffany being on the run from the law in Busan was more interesting. The truth is that they're taking over Slang and making it into a "Live Bar" type deal for foreigners. I don't think that many people know about it because I don't think they've kept in touch with too many of their old customers. I know first hand though because my girlfriend is the lawyer who has assisted them in brokering the deal. |
Yeah, um... |

There is also a bar called Turn that is good because the owners are great. I t is across from slang and on the fourth floor. I just wish it was easier to meet people in the beomgye area that don't want to drink and party all the time and want to do touristy things and travel. |
