So what is that city like? After going to Tokyo would the place seem lame? I mean after being in Seoul, would it be like being in Gwangju (Jeollanam-do)? |
Absolutely not.
Never been to Jeolla, but I hit Fukuoka way before going to Tokyo, and that city has a special place in my heart. Its much nicer, the local girls there were mostly tall and had Marge Simpson bee-hives. Not as chaotic as Tokyo either. Worth a night or two. Or three |

I was in Fukuoka in 2007 and it was a blah city. I didn't spend much money because of the insane prices but Tokyo it ain't. There are a few bars where you can pay a set amount and get unlimited drinks and stuff.
Overall, Japan is a poor choice for a budget vacation as friggin' everything is overpriced to the max.
I think 100 bucks is enough so long as you nurse your beer at bars and clubs. |

I agree. Fukuoka can be kind of boring. There's not much in terms of choices like there are in Tokyo, Osaka or Seoul. Tenjin is the main drinking, eating and entertainment area. Hit the am/pm or Family Mart near Kego Jinja / Park and sit in the park and have a few beers. It can get expensive drinking in the pubs there. |

+1 on the boring. I always do my visa runs there because the place is small enough compared to Tokyo/Osaka that I can handle myself. But when I'm actually there, I just walk around during the day and then hit up a specific bar in Oyafuko at night.
I think Fukuoka is better if you like exploring the countryside. You can get out of the city and do a lot more. But the city itself, you only need two days to see everything and be on your way. |

Zyzyfer,
That's a pretty good summary of the situation for Fukuoka. Good point also about it being a good jumping off point for seeing the country. there are some nice onsen in Beppu, for example, and it's possible to take the train down to Nagasaki for a short trip. Nagasaki is easy to get to and only a couple of hours away from Fukuoka. Good for a day or two if you have the weekend to explore. Oyafuku-dori can be fun but gets played after a while since it's a small area. Also lots of young U.S. military wandering around from Sasebo. Tenjiin is basically it for nightlife there, though. |

Heh, I'll have to remember this stuff next time I'm there. My last venture out of town didn't go so well!
Nightlife...yeah, I tried out one of those dartboard bars, and it was fun and all because I was with someone. But generally, I'm by myself and am not terribly adventurous when I'm there. Even the bar I go to is small and relatively quiet. The owner says I'm always just missing the good nights - to be fair, I'm hitting it up on weeknights - but the guy is straightforward and appreciates the business. I keep going back even though his bar smells weird. |
