You're twice as likely as people who do not have a gun at home to down five or more drinks in a single sitting. You're almost two-and-a-half times more likely than people who do not have a gun at home to get behind the wheel of a car when you have, by your own admission, drunk "perhaps too much." And you were just a little less likely than that (2.39 times as likely to be exact) to consume 60 or more drinks per month.
And compared with gun owners who kept their firearms at home unloaded and under lock and key, those who said they sometimes carry a loaded weapon for personal protection or who keep a weapon loaded and unlocked around the house were more likely to do things like drink and drive, and to engage in what substance abuse researchers call "binge drinking." |

How ironic that the kinds of people that choose to own guns and pack heat are the kinds of people that can least be trusted with lethal weapons. No wonder more guns doesn't mean less crime. |

I am a licensed CCW holder in my home state, and I rarely drink. Personally, I think it is common sense not to drink and carry a firearm.
The republicans are idiots, anyway. |

Alcohol users more likely to abuse guns? I shared an apartment with a Republican gun lover and he was a complete [Mod Edit] with alcohol-related anger management issues. He would leave copies of an NRA propaganda rag in the bathroom despite the fact nobody in the house shared his views. The magazine was basically full of unhinged rednecks getting ready for a war. |

I don't know why this was mentioned in the LA Times since the survey was conducted in 1997 so it's hardly news.
At first I thought it made sense that alcohol abuse and owning firearms would go together since they both seem to be part of a kind of culture that I can't find a word to describe other than redneck. The problem with this is, alcoholics come from all parts of society and I personally know many rich highbrow alcoholics.
There's nothing about owning firearms that would make someone start to abuse alcohol so I think they both have to do with a certain kind of mentality or culture but obviously one doesn't cause the other and presenting it this way seems like propaganda. For what it's worth I'm not a fan of guns and I would possibly be in favor of further restricting them, I just think it's important to be honest about it. |
