The classic is the self medical check form. Basically the three questions of have you anything wrong with you. Basically if you answered yes to anything you have increased your chance of refusal to 10 fold. My advice unless you have something very very serious do not answer yes. Only tell them what they need to know when they ask for it.

So if I've had surgery at one point during the 5 year time span it asks about (for serious injuries or diseases), is it worth mentioning or not?

If you want to be put at the bottom of the pile it is.

The health questions arent being asked to assist you, they're being asked to reject you.

Not mentioning it is lying, but like a fictional, misanthropic doctor frequently says, "Everybody lies".

What kind of surgery or disease? If you had your appendix out - say no. Kidney transplant - yes tell the truth. Yes I know saying no can be lying or even lying by omission. The problem is some people want to helpful and will think being honest will good and/or helpful. This helpfulness will hamper you. Bureaucracies are not friendly and understanding groups and the Korean genus is renowned for being lazy and prejudicial. as I comment with CRCs if an official sees anything more the NO RECORD they will skip you over. For example If I say yes I had a serious disease called varicella-zoster when I was a child. Most official would go "I don't know" what that is but it sounds basd, bang I am refused. I just basically shot myself in the foot basically because I had chicken pox as a child which many children get.

You can find everything in Korea that you could back home. Peanut butter, deodorant, sheets, towels, etc. It'll just be more expensive, deal with it.

Thats a Daves fact.

Now as a mid to long timer in Korea you can help these people out, ignore them or throw sarcasm their way.

Up to you.

What you or anyone will be unable to do is stop the tide of crap questions that float up on this forum. All you can do is wade through it and respond as you see fit.

Yes this is so true but this behavior is harmful for the board. How so. Some long-timer or even just an experienced enough person wants to help. They help and do answer those questions and people. But after answering 10 or 15 or even 100 of the SAME questions over and over again it will affect the person behavior. Plus not getting a response to your help you give answer and instead of thanks - cricket chirps. Or they get rude, whiny or hostile if it is just not right. Given enough time that helpful person will have enough crap and say no more and leave or they will get sarcastic. The board and future people who might need some real help will lose out.

I have seen this happen. Take that saint of Dave's who is filled with the knowledge of Korea and is helpful and kind to many a small newbie - Ttompatz. Ttompatz - I have noticed a change in him. When he first started posting - he we nice, wrote very detailed posts, answered many question even the basic ones. But this constant flood of facebook post size message and ungrateful newbies has started to change him. You will notice he is less detailed and more to the point in his posts. He has become more gruff and even sometimes a little sarcastic. I would not be surprised in a year if he is gone. If he goes - this board will become just a bit more useless.

Well think this - being sarcastic and mean is a defense mechanism used to protect this forum.

Not necessarily. I belong to another very active forum where the culture is to tell people to read the FAQ or to search if they post a question that is commonly asked.

It seemed to mostly do the trick.

A good thing about encouraging people to do their own research is that they come across answers to questions that they never would have thought of.

Oh I agree. However, on Daves, it does not seem to work that way. Generally speaking newbees who post here want a quick response and are too lazy or feel they have no time to "look through all those FAQs".

Thats no big deal really, its a shortcut for them. They are welcome to try it out and often they will get some information out of it.

I once suggested that this site should have a newbee forum dedicated to Q&A for newbees. That would centralize these questions and un clutter the other forums.

That sounds like a good idea! Another idea would it be great if the moderator could also stop a post and delete/lock redundant posts. So rather then starting a new post by a new member the thread could be locked and a link to one or two threads posted. Ala link list member Tomato and his Kindergarten list. Or course the problem with that is it can be a little tiresome and bit difficult.
