What is the best city outside of Seoul and Busan to work in? Do you have an opinion on a third great city in Korea, which is cosmopolitan with an expat friendly life? Or does anybody enjoy being in the rural countryside, away from all and sundry? I have been to Incheon and thought that city was pretty cool, for some reason I seem to like industrial cities. I am interested in hearing about any other cities you like and why?

Well, I know Suwon is considered part of "Greater Seoul" because the subway attaches to it, but I rather liked it.

I found more stares than I would have liked compared to Seoul, but great non-the-less.

It seem that they had a lot of construction however...

Great Wall, are you a freak of nature? Or dashingly handsome? Because I get zero stares in Suwon...I stay in the same neighborhood when I'm there, though.

Cheonan's really dusty and most people would go nuts here, but, aside from the fact that all the cool people I knew last year moved and I now have no pals around, it's aight. It'd be better with some of those cats I knew from last year, though.

I really, really loved the 3 years I spent in Changwon, & miss it a lot. Jobs are jobs, but most people I know loved the city itself. But, a fair bit of construction there the last year 1/2, I've heard.

I thought Jin-ju was pretty funky, and if you could live on an island like Je-ju, Seogwipo (sp?) would be cool.

Cheongju is not the most interesting or cosmopolitan of cities, but I heard several people there claim that it came top in one of those quality-of-life surveys. Not sure about that but it's definitely a more comfortable place to live than the bigger industrial cities like Daejon. It offers a fairly modest shi-nae, a lively student/nightlife area and some new middle-class suburbs where the majority of hagwons are located. There's plenty of other English teaching expats there. And only an hour and a half on the bus if you need a weekend in the big city.

I think there is one city or town(s) that must be in the crux (smart guy word) of those 3 nature preserves in the South West part. Not sure the name(s). Who lives there? Is it a great combo of nature and city?

wow, you city-folk never cease to amaze.

When i first decided to come to Korea, i only had two stipulations: NOT Seoul (or anywhere near it) and NOT Busan (although i'd consider someplace near it).

I love Korea, but those two places are shyte. Well, okay, Seoul is shyte. Busan i've only been to a few times, but i didn't much care for it...

Specifically, the wonderful twin township of Dogu-Yakjeon, with it's blissful views of POSCO from it's delighful garbage choked beach.

29 pages and still counting (slowly) can't be wrong

Of course, it's only the place to be if you are somewhat insane.

Cheongju rocks, No doubt about it. Only other place I would consider living apart from greater Seoul and Busan. Well, maybe you could add Osan/Pyeongtaek/Cheonan to the list.

I too will say Changwon..

i knwo most of you have never heard of it but that only is a good thing..most people the live here and get a nice contract do not leave.

Pluses
*Very clean and open with lots of parks(it is the only planned city in Korea)
*Close to busan(only 45 mins by bus) so if you need to get away it is easy
*Everything is here...lots of cinemas,Lotte, EMart, Homeplus Outback, TGIs, etc...
*It is the 2nd richest city per capita in the country...well lets just say a lot of rich people live here but not too many foreigners...use your imagination
*The expat community here is awesome
