F-4 visa holders: FBI criminal background check necessary?

I was issued my F-4 visa earlier this month and am ready to travel, but a couple sources online claim that I'll need an FBI criminal background check in order to secure employment.

I'm planning on leaving by late August (if possible), and doubt I'd have enough time to get the background check finished by then.

Would it be a good idea to begin the process of getting one anyway, in case, or is this not strictly necessary? Would something like a basic criminal background check (not apostilled/issued by the FBI) suffice?

Thanks very much in advance.

I've been told it is needed for public school but not for hagwons.

It would be easier for you to work at a hagweon if you're a F4 holder.

From my experience, it looks like most, if not all hagwons require the FBI background check. Every single one I've applied to or interviewed with has asked me about the status of my FBI check.

You legally require it to work in a public school (apostille may be asked for but is not legally required if you are on an F2/4/5).

You do not legally require it to work in a hagwan if you are on an F4.

You do require it as an immigration requirement if you are applying for an E2 (the vast majority of posters on this board).

An employer may ask for it as a condition of employment.

Did they know you were on the F4 visa not the E2? I thought the CBC was a E2 visa requirement and the only requirement for actually teaching English was having a 3-4 year degree. I better send off for my CBC if all Hagwons are requiring it.

Sorry for the confusion. Let me explain to provide some clarity.

The hagwons I've applied to all knew I have a F4 visa. However, in order to secure a position, you have to provide an apostilled copy of your CBC.

From my own experience, most hagwons will give you a short window of time (approximately 2 months) to produce an apostilled copy of your CBC after you have started working.

Theoretically, you can accept a position, come to Korea, start teaching, then provide a copy of your CBC within 2 months and you'll be fine.

Take this information with a grain of salt. This is just from my own experience and understanding. You should definitely make sure since all hagwons operate differently.

I have been in contact with 2 recruiters now and you are correct most hagwons want the cbc to make sure you aren't a criminal. They did advise that it does not have to be apostilled (not sure why it does not). They did advise that I could start teaching and would just need to provide it within a reasonable time frame. I just sent mine, so hopefully I'll have it by the end of September.

I got a job offer from a hagwon and all that was required to start working was the f-4 visa and an official copy of my diploma. They said to start the apostille process for the diploma and cbc and that I could send to korea later...

I think having an f-4 gives you the flexibility to start working right away and in the meantime you can start gathering your documents.

That is because it is not required for visa purposes. Maybe I'm not understanding, but why would you have to apostille your diploma and cbc, if you are showing them the original and it isn't required in the first place. I guess it all depends on the hagwon.
