Red Flag: Anyone who makes a big deal one way or the other about the tab.

Go Dutch. Go Man Pay. Go Woman Pay.

Just don't have a conniption over it.

"She wants me to pay? What an old-fashioned hag!"

"He went dutch on the first date? Worse than Hitler!"

This.

I looked at some old photos recently, and to my horror, I realised I was one of those people. In my defence, I was drunk in almost all of the pictures, so it was funny at the time.

You're the one who is quite clearly mired in some outdated neolithic perception of gender roles by assuming the guy always asks the girl out. What is this 1930? According to Gem, regardless of the circumstances, the man should ALWAYS pay... because.....uhm......he has a *beep*.

Not talking about Gem. I didn't say the man always asks the girl out.

You just want to stomp your feet and be angry.

Who's angry here? Last I checked this was an online debate. I have zero emotional investment.

I just find it mindblowing, in 2011, to hear empowered, worldy women say a man should pay for their food -- always. And likewise men saying they pay -- always. It goes against anything i've experiences in RL. And again, your assumption that men always ask girls out on a date is very odd.

I agree that this issue is nothing to get ones panties in a twist over, and if I take the initiative and ask someone out, I pay. But in almost every situation the girl volunteers to pay for drinks, coffee, dessert, etc. for the 2nd round.
