I knew a couple people living in Goshiwons in the Anyang area. They were working an after school program that paid 3.0mil without any housing allowance so having a Goshiwon saved them each a lot of money per month. They stayed there for a year or too so it couldn't have been that bad (their rooms are tiny) but I guess it depends on your personality. Some people never spend time at home!

The dimensions of most Goshiwons are crazy small though. They're probably about the size of a regular sized bathroom. I'd actually prefer one with a leather couch to sleep on instead of a bed as with the bed and the shower room there is hardly even enough clearance to put a desk. I saw one where the door didn't even open all the way because it hit the bed and the only free space was about one foot between the side of the bed and the wall.

I know some people who lived in what Koreans call, "one-rooms".......these are Goshiwon style units but a bit bigger and better equipped. I think there might even be a tiny bathroom.

These cost from about 450,000 upwards.

Lived in one for a few months some years back. I second the advice about getting a room with a window; it gets claustrophic as it is. I didn't think it was so bad when I was living there, but now I don't think I could do it again.

The worst part was when it started getting cold in the winter. They wouldn't turn the heater on during the daytime because almost everyone went out (aside from me who worked nights), so I ended up freezing in my room.

The chong-mu (what they call the manager guy at the goshiwon) was really nice though and ended up lending me a little portable heater I could keep on. He'd ask for it back everytime an inspector came around (it was totally against the rules) and then he gave it back to me when the inspector was gone. I ended up giving him a ton of stuff (unopened shaving kit, cologne set, etc.) when I ended up moving out that I didn't want to take with me.

Do these places usually have a no guest policy?

I might stay in one for a month this summer and it would be nice to have my partner over at least to relax. Staying in a love motel for 70,000 a few times in a month kinda destroys the money saving benefit of the goshiwon.

That's a bit steep for a love motel.
But it depends. Mine didn't, but guests had to be gone by 10pm.

Mine has a no guest after 10 PM rule. I've been caught once, not too much of a big deal though. I haven't been caught many times too, so I guess it's hit or miss.

For those staying/stayed in one, care to share some contact details of the places? I need one in March.

Cheers.

JUst like every rule in Korea, break it and when you get caught, just say sorry and continue what you're doing when the guy goes away.

I've stayed in one before. 350k/month got me:
air conditioning in the summer
internet
full cable package and a small TV
my own shower
laundry access with free soap
kitchen with basic food (kimchi, rice, noodles, eggs, random soup)
keypad entry
security cameras in the hallways
a reasonable sized room with a bed, closet, desk, and several creative storage areas.
a gyopo who crawled home once a week carrying-on on his cellphone to his buddies about how broke he was because he spent the weekend and all his money on hookers (that kind of repetitive entertainment has to be worth a few bucks a month)

This was a clean place, the managers were cleaning for hours everyday, and about the noisiest thing that happened was the alarms in the morning.
Most of the time they're okay, it's when you get someone who could apparently sleep through a war that you run into a problem. Once or twice I heard the managers pounding down a door because someone had let their alarm go for 30 minutes and wouldn't turn it off.

They can be a useful low-rent solution if you need something in a pinch. Some of them are not great, but poke around and you might find a decent one.

Where is this one located and what is the name of the place? Got any additional info? Thanks in advance!

I was staying in one back in the mid 90's when I was single. The best part is when a lonely, drunken young lady who's been eyeing you for weeks at the laundry room and in the kitchen, softly knocks on your door....in the middle of the night...sigh, ah man... the good old days.

walk around a place like Sinchon and you'll see lots of signs saying "residence"..

goshiwons got a bad rap I think from the ones that are super cheap.. like with everything, you pay more, you get more..

pay 400 instead of 200 and you'll be happy.. small, sure, but doable...

you really have to look at a place to check it out.. some of those pictures were taken when it was brand new and may be photoshopped.. but just go to one and look at a room.. this one here had a couple of rather big rooms, but wanted 850 for one..

Like the person above said, no-one communicates, but because I'm anti-social I feel at home. I spend $600,000 a month on accomm and food and couldnt be happier. Of-course, the small lifestyle might not be for you.

where exactly is this place? I need to find a place to stay asap. thanks..
