It sometimes puzzles me why Koreans are always benchmarking themselves to the U.S. Do they think the U.S. is the best country in every category?
and places in Korea are "Korea's <something in the U.S.>" Like Hawaii, or Manhattan.
I guess it's the same how, oh, it's "made in the U.S.A." To me that doesn't mean much, the U.S. makes crap products as well as good products. |

Maybe it's because up until maybe two or three years ago, during Korea's entire economic and cultural growth, the US was the most powerful economic and culturally diverse society in the world? |

zero sum education, ie. there is one right answer.
also, outside the us, japan, china, very few other countries are really referred to.
kills diversity for sure. |

i wouldn't find it too puzzling since the US was the BEST in almost every industry w/a couple of exceptions for nearly the entire last century
currently though, America is in a very bad way in what made it great namely Education system (individual intellectual thought - it still leads in the most important category, greatest number of successful thinkers or those w/ideas that change the world) i.e. Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Warren Buffett, etc.
its decline in such areas as Middle Class nearly disappearing, the gap between the Rich & Poor increasing, Outsourcing, and Debt which still shocks me:
The estimated population of the United States is 310,949,917 so each citizen's share of this debt is $46,159.37.
The National Debt has continued to increase an average of
$3.85 billion per day since September 28, 2007!
in my opinion, Korea has done a fantastic job in adopting to Capitalism while holding onto many of its old ideas of Government that has both brought astonished growth and a sustained idea that government is a very powerful institution |

The US is the world's largest economy and has a pretty heavy-handed media influence everywhere. For better or worse, people have some bizarre fascination with it. |

If Korea is going to adopt America's reliance on credit to buy things, Korea is headed for big trouble. |

Along with America being the dominant country for the past century, they fought with South Koreans in their war, currently provide military support, and basically spoon fed them money and technology until they could support themselves.
Not that I agree with the policy of foreign troops or throwing money/tech at other countries, but that is MOST LIKELY the reason. |
