No. But it does show a cultural sensitivity towards suffering that westerners don't make animal execution the centrepiece to every meal. |
I think it shows a cultural sensitivity towards realizing that what you're eating was once alive; this isn't a good thing. |

If you're going to make outlandish claims, you should back them up somehow. To say that most Koreans have a strong irrational fear of animals is pretty outlandish. |
I don't think it is outlandish at all.
A lot of Koreans have told me they don't like animals/ are afraid of them.
This is not an attack on Korea. just an observation. Its really not that hard to notice if you have your eyes open when walking around Seoul.
2 weekends ago I saw an old ajosshi walking around Jongno with a huge sack full of puppies. obviously the ones at the bottom of the sack (bumping on the pavement) were not having a fun time.
I've seen the same thing with ajosshis selling day-old chicks.
This just wouldn't be allowed in the west.
"LittleLisa" seems to think its OK and normal though. |
Not liking animals is not the same as a phobia. Mistreating animals is also not a phobia. If you said that in general animals were not treated as humanely here, I would agree. That doesn't mean it comes from a phobia. If the ajosshi truly had a phobia of dogs, he would not be carrying a sack of them. Please, look up the word phobia in a dictionary.
And precisely where did I say that treating animals inhumanely was OK and normal? I said that most Koreans do not have a phobia of animals as far as I have seen. Other posters seem to agree. Maybe it's just you? Mistreatment of animals IS an issue here, but it is not the same thing as a phobia, and I stand by my opinion that you are making outlandish claims.
And for the record, I am NOT OK with mistreatment of animals, and I don't consider it normal. Just in case it wasn't clear.
On top of everything ONE WOMAN had a huge overreaction to a dog on the subway. Everyone else (yes, Koreans!) explained to her it was okay and that the dog was a guide dog. That doesn't seem to show that most Koreans have a phobia of animals. |

I mentioned moths and flies.

Glad that you see sense.

great. I've made someone realise that abusing animals is wrong. Congratulations, you are able to admit your mistake.

That is true, but the two are closely linked. Fear and abuse are natural cuasatives and consequences of one another.

The sack was full of puppies. Nobody is afraid of puppies except the 5 yr old kids.
I said dogs. Dogs implies adult canines. Fully-grown barking dogs.
If you think the word "dog" generally refers to a puppy, then you obviously need to get a refresher course in the English language.
of course he wasn't afraid of a load of helpless pups. But from what I've seen many if not most koreans are afraid of adult dogs and also harbor bad attitudes towards cats.

Try to debate without relying on strawmen.

Notice how in the quote I had posted it was also TUM (who specifically mentioned bees or hornets) not just you! And it wasn't a cicada it was some kind of huge black beetle with gigantic pincers.
I've presented evidence and facts that proves there is an animal rights movement in Korea. And other evidence and facts that American "animal cruelty" standards are not more advanced than Korean. You've presented no evidence but that from your Western (maybe white) supremacy complex. Nothing based on facts. Who is the clueless one??? |

Maybe that goes for some creatures, but for most, the west has standards regarding the humane killing of animals...aimed at limiting cruelty or suffering. Even eels and fish are killed humanely (put in subzero water). |
I am confused about two things: One, the existence of subzero water. |
Doesn't adding salt to water lower its freezing point below zero degrees celsius? |
Yeah, I feel like somewhere, on this planet, I've seen water that is below freezing before but still in it's liquid state. I just can't place it....but I feel like it is a naturally occurring thing. Oh wait a second, isn't like 75% of our planet covered with that kind of water that freezes at a temperature below zero. Oh yeah, that's right, it's called salt water. |

in my experience yes.
Koreans are afraid of flies and moths but not cicadas.
memi have a special place in the Koreans heart. They even have memi animation cartoon characters. There are numerous cultural references to cicadas.

Only crabs have pincers. Where were you, at the seaside?
You keep saying this thing was huge. judging by your description, I'm surprised the victim was not knocked off her feet when the thing hit her.
Did you call in the sharpshooters? The army? |

Your attempt at attacking my lack of insect knowledge is not doing anything to defend or prove that you aren't being a bigot and a hypocrit by spewing out your baseless nonsense. You are criticizing an entire culture based on one stupid woman, who was also criticized by the members of her own culture. Meanwhile, turning a blind eye (which you admitted on a few occassions because we have some kind of high morality where we kill animals in huge factories, after they've been so pumped full of hormones, force fed, that they can't stand) to the practices of your own country.
So basically you are agreeing with almost every Korean person, with the exception of this one idiot on the subway. And at the same time calling them all bad people for the way they treat animals. And you can't back up any of your claims with any evidence. Why am I even bothering to have this discussion with you?
Furthermore: Insects do have pincers. Wrong again! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pincer_(biology)

Your so-called "experience" doesn't mean anything. There are tens of millions of Koreans, and you're actually claiming they're all afraid of flies and moths (but specifically not cicadas ) based on the few Koreans you know personally? Just plain ridiculous. |

Where are these giant humungous factories, and how many years does it take to walk the length of one?
If the cows are all swollen up like balloons and unable to stand, how do they move from one feeding trough to the other? On bicycles and push-carts? |

How about the biggest one in the world. I think when something is classified as the largest in the world. It is safe to call it huge. Smithfield Packing Company
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smithfield_Packing_Company
Here's a great video from inside one.
http://www.oprah.com/oprahshow/Inside-a-Slaughterhouse-Video
And another from America. The most advanced country for animal rights.
http://www.good.is/post/slaughterhouse-live-this-is-what-big-agriculture-is-hiding/
How about Broiler Chickens.
Veal (which I already mentioned)
Cows that are forcefed corn, mashed up old cows and pigs and whatever else is cheap to improve beef flavor
Geese and ducks that are forcefed until they can't stand up. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Force-feeding
Most aren't given the option to move from trough to trough. They are confined to a small cage or pen their entire short miserable life. This ain't Charlottes Web dude. These farms are more like factories. |

Now there's a crushing disappointment. I was hoping for an animal with the head of a goat and body of a spider and all I get is this. |
