Hello,

It is common knowledge that South Korea and China are enemies but what is South Korea's relationship with Japan?

Are they allies? Rolling Eyes

Are North Korea and China together on one side and South Korea and Japan joined on the other?
It would make sense as well if indeed they are allies because they are neighbours in pretty close proximity to each other (it's a 2 hour journey from South Korea to Japan by ferry, isn't it?)

So I guess I would just like to know what kind of relationship they have and if somebody has 6 months experience or more working as an ESL teacher is Japan and writes about it when they apply for a position as an ESL teacher in South Korea, how is that perceived???

First off South Korean and China are NOT enemies. In fact China is South Korea's largest trading partner.

South Korea and Japan are not allies but trading partners.

And it's a three hour journey by ferry not two.

As for six months of experience..probably doesn't count for all that much anywhere in the world.

6 months is pretty meaningless as far as experience counts (no matetr where you got this experience).

As for your theory of world political alignment, it was entertaining and somewhat cute.

Hi,

any experience is valuable, many people come here without a days experience and the fact you have lived in Asia and taught will put you ahead of some. A piece of advice, the Koreans may be a bit suspicious of the 6 months because most contracts here are 12 months minimum, make sure it is clear why it was only 6 months.

With regards of Korea and Japan, it is a complicated issue, simply Koreans will tell you they hate Japan but they don't think twice of buying or using Japanese products. Hello Kitty is so popular here. The Dokdo argument never goes away either.

After almost three years in Korea I went to teach in Japan for a year and my experience in Korea was absolutely worthless. I'd imagine it'd be the same way in the other direction, especially with a measly six months experience...

While there are Koreans who like Japan, the majority of the population has this deep rooted umbrage against Japan.

Once I wore a shirt that said "I <3 日本" (I heart Japan) and several of my friends told me, "Take that shirt off right now", "I don't like that shirt", "Traitor" and so forth. The elders at my church also gave me crap about wearing the shirt. The animosity runs deep. Once I got a 2 hour lecture as to why I should hate Japan and stop buying Japanese products.

As for your resume/CV, it's a hit or miss. If your recruiter doesn't care about Japan, the experience might help.

Nobody said anything when I wore my "私は愚かな観光客です" t-shirt. Laughing

Koreans love my "나는 미국인이 안니에요" t-shirt!
