Damn, I'd hate to be a public school teacher in a bad neighborhood. I talked to one who worked in South Central Los Angeles under Teach for America. She told me how students would not be disciplined for things like throwing desks and chairs at her, yelling profanities or threats at her, or turning in writing assignments that consisted of detailed anal rape fantasies about her. She told me that she cried every day on the way to work and again on her way home.

A new study by the by the Council of State Governments finds that 60 percent of Texan students were suspended, expelled or faced in-school suspensions by the time they graduated high school.
The researchers followed every Texas seventh grader into high school, the New York Times reports, studying almost 1 million students.
Fifteen percent of the students were disciplined 11 times or more over the six years. And the more frequently a student faced suspension or expulsion, the greater the chances would be that the disciplined student would eventually drop out, according to the Council of State Governments analysis.
"African-American students and those with particular educational disabilities experience a disproportionately high rate of removal from the classroom for disciplinary reasons," study author Mike Thompson told NPR. Seventy percent of black female students were expelled or suspended, compared to 37 percent of white girls, he said. |

They'd throw them in jail if they could. Hell, they're Texans! They are deserving of being shot if they do something real bad, like trespass on someone's lawn. |

The fact that so many students need to be suspended or expelled demonstrates that schools need more real disciplinary tools available to them. Suspension and expulsion essentially punt disciplinary responsibility to the parents, but if the parents in question were seriously up to the task, things would rarely escallate to a level where suspension or expulsion was required. |

See? The right wing solution: MORE punishment!
Such logic has MILLIONS of Americans in jail today. |

Louis, out of curiosity, what do you think should be changed about Texan schools? I mean seriously, they need some form of discipline, no?
Definitely agree with Fox that schools need more options for discipline. It's pretty clear that in the last 60 or 70 years disciplinary options in schools have shrunk enormously, and I don't think it's any coincidence that behavior problems like this are becoming so common. |

It all comes back to the parents. It is the responsibility of the parents to instill values and enforce discipline. Unfortunately, parents are getting lazier and now expect the schools to not only educate their children, but to raise them as well! Then, when schools discipline the children, many parents refuse to believe that their "little angel" could possibly be the cause of the problem. When did parents become so worthless? |

Is this why so many Texans are ginger? Or is it just the inbreeding? |

you can claim right wing this or that or whatever you want to say, but i believe in eye for an eye and discipline of students for the wrongs they commit. If you look at the school systems years ago, things were no where near as bad as it is today. Now if you discipline a student a parent who isnt too keen on keeping up with their studies or even being involved in their learning SUDDENLY wants to sue or bring about some kind of racism brought because of their student. forget that S**T!
the justice system now is F'ed up as well, insanity for this and that? man kill them for what they did! you are tried by a jury of your peers. if you raped/killed someone you DONT deserve life, or a chance to sit in a prison awaiting your execution TWENTY years later. tax payers feed the bunches of criminals who sit and live a carefree life in jail. start making examples of the prisoners and executing criminals for their crimes and i GUARANTEE things eventually will become safer because of fear of punishment, instead of just going to jail and sitting there. |

Calm down. I'm probably one of the most left-leaning people on this forum. I'm just also not an ideologue, and as such, I am willing to recognize observable trends and the causes behind them even when it clashes with what I wish were true. As schools have disciplined less, students have become worse behaved, to a degree where it's simply out of control. This is observable in America, it's observable in Britain, you can even see it unfolding as we speak in Korea. Sure, there are other factors at work (such as a reduction in the quality of parenting), but for the most part those factors defy a real, direct solution. How we handle children during the school day, however, is completely within our control.
The kind of knee-jerk response you've proffered here is precisely the sort of thing that makes solving our society's problems is so difficult. Between the totally apathetic "If it's not Dancing With The Stars I don't care" middle and the spazmatic ideological babies, the tiny minority of citizens that are willing to carefully think about problems and how to solve them almost drown out of the political process entirely. |

Right-wingers never know any facts! Crime rates are down way down from what they were in the past. In fact we are MUCH MUCH MUCH harder on criminals today than 20 years ago, or 80 years ago. In most school districts they will suspend you for five days if you get caught with Tyelnol or Midol at school. Texas is a Police State. |

That's what I'm curious about - what are grounds for suspension, and how much have they changed over the years? |
