I want to buy a couple of new suits, some shirts, maybe a jacket for fall and am wondering whether to get them made in Itaewon. I don't want to spend the kind of money charged by some of the tailors outside Itaewon: 1 to 1.5 million Won is well above my budget for one suit.

I've done a quick search and one thing people are saying is you should know exactly what you want, because the kind of style Korean people like might be quite different from Western expectations. I've noticed that in a lot of department stores the suits are mostly slim-fit - which looks okay on skinny early-twenties guys, but probably not so good on me.

My question is: has anyone had any clothes made here? Were you happy with the results? Do you have any advice on where to go or anything else?

Thanks in advance,

Alistair

There's a shop on the main road in Itaewon, kind of across the street from Tom n Tom coffee. He's the best. A suit will run you 300 or 350. Shirts are 20 a pop, but he'll give you a discount if you order a bunch.

You don't need to know anything about what you want before you go in. He'll show you pictures of what's in style and what's a classic. Then you can pick out the material and color and everything else. If you want, you can check out some of the designers sites like Calvin Klein, Hugo Boss, or Armani just to see what's the trend. Meaning do the shirts have short point collars or button collars. 3 button suits or 2 button. Double breasted if a you're a slim guy, single if you're not. That sort of thing.

If you're going to get new suits though, do it proper and get a good pair or two of shoes to go with them. Don't be one of these douches that gets a suit and wears black converse with it.
