Only takes 4 - 5 days to get a visa. I'm sure there are plenty of flights left, although they may be a bit more expensive now (500-600 dollar range).

You can also take a ferry from Incheon to China.

i got a flight for $280 return, but it's 6 days so I'll spend more on hotels.

I intend to head there mid August and I'm not booking flights until I get my visa back (should be next Wednesday)

What are your favorite places to go whilst in Beijing? Something off the beaten path a little? Maybe a Hongdae/Sinchon/Hapjeong type area? Am I naive in assuming there's something similar?

And, I mean outside of Summer Palace, Forbidden City, Tianemin, WongfuginSt., Temple of Heaven, etc.

Sanlitun has been a nightlife institution for foreigners in Beijing for years. It's not as cool as it used to be, but it's still worth a night out.
