One day is about ten percent of your whopping ten days paid vacation. I would fight for a single day added to these ten.

But of course, if you're not voting you can work.

I thought that Thursday was a public holiday, not a national holiday. Meaning that all government agencies are closed, while private companies don't have the day off or it's optional. Almost all of my Korean friends are working on Thursday.

I know schools like to give that "you don't need to vote" line, but really, if you follow that line of reasoning, we shouldn't get any Korean holidays off except maybe Christmas and New Year's.

And even further along that line, all the non-Christian Koreans had better show up for work on Christmas Day, since that "doesn't apply to them", either.

I understand that many teachers who have to work on Thursday don't want to make waves over one stupid day. But I'm sure that while they're rationalizing it, they also know deep down that they're getting shafted.

It's a bit of a purity test for hogwon owners, and the ones who are requiring their staffs to work are failing it. Those stories of "our school always has 20 work days a month, so we have to work" are just excuses, if you have a "national holiday" clause in your contract.

Ok Friday I was at my hogwon and asked the owner when my last day was since he wanted me to get my visa in canada before I flew to Korea, which caused a difference in visa start time ( 1st day of working) and actual start time, the day I actually started working which was June 26th. My visa says it exp. on june 24th, which means my last day of working would have to be Wednesday June 23rd

If my school tells me im working im telling them to *beep* off quiting, punching the owner in the head a few times and going back to canada.

let me get this straight... you won't do 1 day of work to keep the peace for the next 9 - 10 weeks until you have finished your contract?

instead.. you figure it is best to punch the director and forfeit your airfare and severence pay?

snap out of it

I have no idea. I just know I get it off. If I was at my old hagwon I wouldn't have it off.

Nothing wrong with just being a nice boss and letting your employees relax on a Thursday.

Relaxed employees work better.

Employees who feel their boss is trying to squeeze every bit of time out of them don't work better.

Instead of employees being angry about not getting it off there should be a bunch of bosses pissed that there is a holiday.

Of course as I said, it's a voting day. It is meant to make sure folks vote isn't it?

For those of us who have it off, who is going to vote?

My company is closed and my friends' companies are closed.

At my company only mission critical staff are working (I am not "mission critical") and they are getting a half day and some special meal.

no and no- thanks for the pm

What are you gonna do? What's the big plan? Is it like a near-death experience?

I'm going to sing to the kids at the local orphanage then deliver hot meals to the homeless...

And when I wake up...

I'm going to do nothing. Nothing, what an idea! What a sane idea! I will fall into complete and utter indolence! Whoo hoooooooooooo!

I doubt there are many people on this board who CAN vote. Maybe 5-6. I believe you have to be a Korean citizen to vote in this election.[i]

Exactly, why do we NEED the day off? It's nice to have a holiday, but complaining.....

My wife is making me work but it doesn't bother me. The alternative is we lose 500k in lost income. I generally hate holidays, too damn expensive. I've got Saturdays and Sundays off. That's enough for me.

What do you have an oil well or what? That's some major cash for one day.
