I have a lamp with an American plug. Where can I buy and adapter to fit over the plug so I can use it here in Korea? Thanks.

Wrong.

You can't use a lamp because the voltage is different. If you want to use US lamp you will have to use a 40 dollar voltage converter/transformer.

Laptops and other portable electronics have these built in, it's the big black bar in the middle of the cord. These can be used with a simple plug converter

Nope.

The lamp is fine with the plug adapter (or just cut the plug off and put a new one (korean plug) on the end of it. 300 won and 2 minutes with a screwdriver).

You will need to change the bulb as well (if it a 125VAC bulb from the states) to one rated for 240VAC rather than 125VAC.

You won't need a voltage converter.

If you're not in a particular hurry, you can get them on ebay. There are several suppliers there that sell them for ONE US DOLLAR (and that INCLUDES postage!!!!). Sound too good to be true?! Well, I've bought a couple that way before and it FOR SURE works.

The only drawback is that it takes a week or two for the adapter to arrive.

If you want one faster, try Technomart at Gangbyeon, the Electronics Mall at Yongsan or any of the hardware stores in Itaewon. I believe I've also seen them at Hannam Supermarket near Hangangjin Station (though I wouldn't absolutely swear to it).

I have the same question. I've checked the little mom & pop hardware stores and they just have the old school (2 pronged, non-polarized) ones. I need to get my computers and my cpap plugged in asap.

Any ideas where to get some? I'm in Gwangju, so I'm looking for chain stores. I'd rather not have to wait to order some from ebay or amazon.

Go to home-plus or e-mart and buy a universal power bar (accepts round 2-pin or 3-prong plugs).

Unlike the usual 2-prong plug power bars (6k won) the universal one will cost you about 15k.

I didn't see anything like that when I was at Home Plus yesterday. Perhaps I'll have better luck at Emart.

No, you won't. I've never seen anything but Korean plug power bars in Korea.

What you want is the WA-9 adapter, just search "WA-9" on amazon.com to see a picture of it. I bought some from the states and had them mailed here by a friend. Got 2 extra ones I could sell for 16,000, but I guess that belongs in the buy/sell thread Twisted Evil

They are here and they look like this:

http://www.110220volts.com/Merchant2/graphics/00000001/6strip.jpg

(allow 2 pin round or 3 prong plugs and plug into a Korean wall socket).

You should also be able to find them at your local hardware place (since lots of imported tools (drills, routers, etc.) have the 3-prong plugs as well.

Yes, I got a converter at my local hardware place, so this could be a place to look

Were you able to find one? If not, I just got back from vacation in the states. While I was there, I purchased a universal adapter (can be configured to match just about any plug or socket on earth) for $10 at Walmart. The quality is good and I only used it for about 2 weeks to plug in my ipad.

I'll sell it to you for 10,000. I'm located near Jamsil but am moving to Bundang this weekend. Lemme know if you're interested.
