I and many teachers in my area recieved a letter stating that GEPIK's funding has been cut and they are NOT renewing any teachers contracts because of lack of funding. The letter states that they will begin hiring again March 1 2012. this is stupid for a few reasons...

1. they want kids to learn english (universal language after all!) but they cut funding.
2 Public school is how most parents have their children learn english, hagwons are a COSTLY alternative to public school english.
3 why cut the jobs that end on the day that you will hire people?
4 the free public lunch for students was a STUPID move (just a personal thought!)

these among other things are making this a HUGE step backwards. thoughts/comments?

There is already a huge thread in the "Jobs" forum here on this:

1. The Province cut funding, not the parents or the schools.
2. Public schools are not where students learn - hagwans are.
3. They aren't renewing people now - doesn't mean they won't renew people in March.
4. They are having a referendum on that soon. Besides, that's Seoul, not Gyeonggi. Apples to oranges.

The whole gepik program is a colossal waste of money. They hire unqualified people and place them with schools who don't know how to use them. They have no curriculum or syllabus, and the kids study a whole 3 hours a week for a language that takes approximately 2300 hours to become fluent in. At that rate, the kids will be fluent by the time they are in their mid 30's.

I see students for 45 minutes each week in classes of 40+, so it's less than 3 hours per week.

1. i didnt say the parent or schools cut funding. i know the province did
2. I stated that schools are how most parents have their students learn english. Regardless of how many hours a teacher puts in, by your standards or anyone elses children DO learn there. and i stated COSTLY alternative as in being something that COSTS more to the parents than not having to pay public schools specifically for english.
3 This is known. but if a contracts date ends on march 1st and their visa expires the same day but the school MAY rehire them per available funding, if its after march 1st, that person is entitled to a fine for going over their exp date of their visa.

funny you say that GEPIK is a waste of money. i agree that for the most part that they hire unqualified people and place them in schools that sometimes have no idea how to use them. But the same can be said for hagwons as well. I know quite a few hagwon workers who teach different subjects in their hagwons that have NO relation to their college degree and/or something they have VERY little knowledge about. (example would be a guy i know who teaches the history of korea in english to kids at his hagwon while he has a B.A. in music) makes just as much sense as GEPIK. And these are some of the bigger hagwons too. Personally, i bust my ass teaching my kids, i actually care to make them learn and understand english as much as possible. I interact as much as possible with them in AND out of the classroom.

I already left. I was in EPIK and had been told by a local rep that people with contracts ending between April and August had a 50/50 chance of being renewed, and that severance would be paid in August instead of 2 weeks after renewal. I just didn't renew. My school had been screwing around with me, anyway, so I found a nice hagwon (they do exist!) and have never been happier.

Was that '50/50 chance of being renewed' rumor relating to EPIK or GEPIK?
