Yes, I've seen the school and it is very close to the station. It's also rather near the air force base and all the services (good and bad) that go along with that. I suppose if it is as seedy as some have described it I'll be hopping on the train a few stops when I go out in the evenings; from what I've read the GI's don't venture too far from home.
How about transport to Seoul, I know the train takes about an hour but it seems like there could be an express bus that could do it in less? Bikes on the train?
Some people have described Songtan as a break from Korea in Korea, I'm hoping a short bike ride or train ride will be enough to get me "in Korea". . .
Also, Anyone familiar with the city know where I can take Korean classes? I'm "intermediate" but one of my goals is to gain fluency. |

Yep, the Line 1 subway is a long slow slug of a commuter train if you're taking it from all the way out down into Seoul Station. While there may be some kind of 'express' bus somewhere, I would recommend instead that you take the Line 1 up to the provincial capital Suwon, get off and transfer to a KTX to Seoul.

From walking around Songtan I wouldn't say it's any 'seedier' than anywhere else in the general vicinity. It's about as ugly and meandering as most dongs and gus tend to be in most cities in this country. Unless by 'seedy' you only mean it has more Americans around, in which case I'll just have to disagree with your premise. But don't worry, you'll be FULLY 'in Korea' with very little effort. That never takes very long, if you actually want it anyway.
Sorry I can't help you with Korean classes. I have less than no interest in this language |
