Myself and a friend have just completed our first month's work at a hagwon...we could just about handle being thrown in at the deep end and expected to teach the kids..but our manager failed to tell us that we would only get two weeks pay of our first months wages. He didnt explain until I asked him where the other half was. Apparently we will get it at the end of our contract. Naturally we were pretty annoyed,because we have a few days holidays and cant do all the things we wanted to do.

Evil or Very Mad

Is this normal?? Do hagwons often withold money from your wages???

If it's not in your contract, then it's illegal.

Contact the Labor Board and get them to set your manager straight.

It depends on when your contract date falls. For example if you are paid for July on August 15th, and you only worked 2 weeks in July, then he is correct in saying that you will receive it at the end of your contract (meaning that you'll be paid for your last two weeks as your last paycheck.

If you worked a full month, and he is only paying you for half, then you are being illegally screwed, and you need to threaten the labor board and then if he still refuses.. go. We need to let these hagwon directors know that we will not take their shit just because we are foreigners.

That indicates to me you worked a full month, but I am not 100% sure. You should get paid for whatever you worked.

Check your contract for anything that might say "security deposit". If it's not there, then you shouldn't have to wait.

One school did something similar, but I didn't say anything because it was only a few days, and they did pay me in full when I quit. I think it was something where I started on September 21st (2009), but their accounting system only pays up to the 23rd of each month. So at the end of the month I was expecting a week's worth of pay. They only paid for 3 days, but I was owed 8.

I guess you need to see how they handle their expenses. Also, you shouldn't be planning any trips if you are worried about 2 weeks of pay. If you don't already have the money saved up, then you need to do that. Don't live paycheck to paycheck. This might be a good lesson in the end.

What I would do though is get payment slips from them. Document everything. Keep all your utilities receipts to show proof you were living there. This will prevent them from saying that you came late into the contract period if it ever reaches labor board.

Sometimes when you move into an apartment, they have a bill from the previous tenant. Snag it, copy it.

The same thing happened to me at my last school, and I was pretty confused about it. It turns out it did make sense.

So if I started work on the 10th of January, and the pay periods end on the 1st of the month, come the 10th of February, I only get paid from January 10th - Feb. 1st. The next month is Feb.1st -March 1st, your first full month. So when you finish of your contract it all evens out in the end.

Talk to your manager and korean coworkers to see if this is what's happening. If it is a big problem maybe they can change your payroll, but expect them to forget a couple times as it is a new inconvenience.

yeah, definitely talk it over and make sure that your are correct about getting ripped off before you call them out on it. From personal experience, it sucks when you are sure that they are stealing money from you and you make a big scene about it, only to find out that they weren't.

OP posted on July 27. sounds like he worked 2 weeks in June and 2 weeks in July, then got paid for June..

otherwise, I can't figure out how he posted on July 27.. he didn't get paid for July yet..
