A friend of mine came to Busan and was set in his mind to stay in a Guesthouse.
I advised him to stay in a Motel, but he didn't agree.

We went to the Wow Guesthouse in Haeundae and they wanted 65.000 for a shared room per night.

Indy Guesthouse in the Gwangali area, but a good 10 minutes from the beach charged him 45,000 per night.

I personally have stayed in Love Motels with a huge King Sized bed and 56 inch HD flat screen TV and desktop computer, cold and hot water dispenser not to mention an insanely big bathroom about 8 pyong for 35,000 a night.

So can someone please tell my why the Guesthouse in Korea are so expensive ?

So, if you know that love motels are cheap, why are you sticking to guest houses? Just put your friend up at a love motel. My husband and I stayed in a suite at a really nice love motel in Busan. We had a pool table in one of the rooms! It cost us about 75k a night, so we certainly could have found a cheapo one for about 35k.

It's been explained to me that they charge a premium because you can cook there rather than eat out. My girlfriend tends to insist on pensions for this reason, but I think you usually get better digs and spend less money overall if you stay at a motel, regardless of meals out.

^^

Summer. Busan prices skyrocket in the summer. Particularly by the beach for rather obvious reasons.

Best answer.

I live 2 blocks from the beach and forget sometimes this is a destination.

What is a 'guesthouse'? Love motels are so cheap and almost always nice & clean, why would you stay anywhere else? Prices are jacked during the summer, especially at the beach, but there are lots of areas of Busan that still have motels for 35k, send them there.

given the location and the time, i'd say that's a pretty good deal. you're just another stingy foreigner here that doesn't have the coin to have a good time. i could see this guy with a chick and saying "nah, too much for my blood" and walking out the front doors

if you were smart you'd stay outside of Haeundae and save money. lmao @ u

That's 130,000 won for two people in a room with bunk beds. Seems a little excessive, doesn't it?

Cheapness aside, hostels and guesthouses in this country are a joke. In Korea you often get what you pay for in terms accommodations, but certainly not guesthouses. "Resorts" tend to be a trap as well.

korea isn't geared to travelers no matter what time of the year.

that said, W65,000 for a shared room per night seems fine given the time of year and location. i'm not saying i'd be happy about it, but i'd pay it.

you were in arguably one of the busiest parts the entire country and you're complaining about having to spend 65? have you even been to manhattan? tokyo? if you were in tokyo (in a prime time location like shibuya or shinjuku) expect to pay no less than 100 for those accommodations. if you were in the upper east side you would have ended up sleeping on the street. it isn't excessive; you're cheap. and you don't have the coin to have a good time. no use denying it.

Come on Mars! You can't compare as dump hostel overcharging with staying on the Upper East Side. A lot of Americans know little of the Upper East and West Sides beyond Sex and the City or Gossip Girl. I doubt you've ever stayed anyplace other than a friend or family member's while in Manhattan. Then again, maybe you just catch the train back to NJ when you're done.

Things may get busy down in Busan, but it's still possible to find love motels for around the same price as a shared room for two at that hostel, even if they have doubled in price for the summer. Something tells me marsavalanche is not shelling out 3-400,000 won a night to stay at the Westin or Paradise on his public school salary.

By the way, one could argue that anyone who is willing to shell out 130,000 won to share a room with a bunk bed with his/her significant other is stupid rather than living the high life.
