Checked the online Spreadsheet for EPIK today and all my top 5 cities, plus a few more, are gone.

Does anyone know whether these positions have been filled or whether it just means that EPIK have recommended candidates for all these positions and, most likely they will be filled.
The reason I asked is because My documents were received 15 days ago and put forward to the SMOE, yet I have heard nothing back.
So essentially, have I missed the boat when it comes to getting a position in Seoul or the other larger cities or am I still in with a chance? |

| You've missed the boat for the preferential spots. However, you'll probably hear back in a few weeks and offered a position that no one else wanted. However, you may get lucky because there are a few people who will change their minds, and there are always the few dumbasses who come here and either fail the drug test, or do something stupid to get kicked out of orientation. Then they need to fill those positions and you'll be a "Late Intake" |

Thanks for the replies.
I'm aware that i can get jobs from hagwons and such but I've my heart set on public school jobs, better holidays and peace of mind.
Gonna ring EPIK about it tonight and try and get a clearer picture cos I'll have to make alternative plans.
I'm not interested in moving out into the sticks not for my first year there anyway. |

What is your conception of "out into the sticks"? There are a lot of inner city Mickey Mouse teachers in Tokyo, Osaka, Seoul, Busan, Shanghai, and Beijing. |

I don't know what that sentence means, not sure is it cos I'm tired but I can't make sense of it, could you elaborate please.
I want to be in or near a city. I grew up in the country and though it undoubtedly has it's charms I've lived in cities the last 7 years and prefer them. I want to live in a place where I can access *some* western people,food and culture when needed. |

I will try to indoctrinate you then.
Imagine the perfect 10 year old birthday party. When I was a kid, this involved pizza, a movie, and a guy in Chucky Cheese costume.
This guy is basically your idol if you want to please the inner city school owners. You are like a killer whale at SeaWorld. Do your tricks, and then swim away until next class.
You are PURE ENTERTAINMENT when these schools hire you.
I found that out in the country or in the public school system, you can be you.

I think we may have our wires crossed. I've applied for a Public school job in the larger cities, not a private school job.
I haver heard that a lot of the private schools/hagwons in large cities hire you as a babysitter/entertainer which is why I'd rather steer clear of them. If I've missed the proverbial boat then I will head somewhere else in the meantime and try S.K. again next year. |

I'm in the same boat. I thought since I sent my application in the first week of July while there were still spots in Seoul that I had fairly-decent odds. Only to find that EPIK didn't send my docs to SMOE until TODAY. 
I guess I can only hope they reject me quickly and send my paperwork to the boonies before THOSE are gone. |

Teatime : How did you find out they just sent your docs? Thats terrible.
I'm just hoping that I may be one of the people who got a position and haven't been told cos i saw that a girl on their facebook page was accepted yesterday and the position were filled Tuesday. But i'm not holding my breath |

Doesn't matter. You can still be treated the same. With a public school, they can get funding which allows them to not only have you teach their students but bring visiting students from other schools in the area to you.
It's legal because you still work at one location. At least at a private school job, they can't do this unless they own another location. |

They can still bring students in at a private school job...it's totally legal. If the students then decide to join so much the better.
And I've never had to teach visiting students from other schools...but if I had to so what?
Besides which the one location issue doesn't always apply when you work for public schools. Your employer is the province/city in most cases (not all though) and if that is so you can legally teach at two or more schools in said province or city. There is usually a clause in the GEPIK/EPIK contracts that specifically states this.
If however you were hired directly by the school it may be different. |

Got info from EPIK, the spreadsheet only lists the number of applicatons put forward for the position. It's for the people who had yet to submit their documents. It has no bearing on how many positions are left.
So luckily I'm still in with a chance of getting the job I want. |

Yep. Noticed that too, that it didn't say "spaces filled" but rather "applicants recc'd" ... so if I've been recc'd that means I've passed that stage of the gauntlet. It could also mean that other people who've already sent their paperwork in have been recc'd as well but wouldn't know it.
I think you're in the same spot if you've been 'put forward to the SMOE.'
