I've always wondered if the other countries in the Asia-Pacific region that suffered from Japanese colonial occupation and WWII still harbor a deep seated hatred for Japan.

What about your average Filipino or Chinese guy? Do they get all emotional when discussing Japan?

Or is this unique to Korea?

Or what about Europe? Do the French and Belgiums get all emotional when discussion Germany as if they were invaded yesterday?

The Europeans seem to have gotten over the Nazi horror a lot better than the Koreans have gotten over Japan's occupation. Heck, there are Jews who don't resent Germany as much as Koreans resent Japan.

Yes, though perhaps not to the extent the Koreans still carry it. The Chinese certainly remember.

It seems like Taiwan forgot quickly and love all things Japanese. It seems Filipinas give it very little thought as well..

I was amazed by being an American in Vietnam on a couple visits. Vietnamese love Americans.. they just think of us as one of a long stream of Imperial Powers that got their ass kicked by them - France, China, US, Cambodia.. they kicked everyone´s ass!

Don´t know if Korea will ever forgive and forget about Japan though.. doesn´t appear it will happen in our lifetime.

OP,
You obviuosly didn't know about the Japanese sex orgy in a Chinese hotel late last year the sent them crazy.

Also China and Japan are very angry about an islands territorial rights near taiwan. The Japanese arrested 7 Chinese people who came ashore to claim it.

Japan and China are not getting on to well at the moment.

Plus the raping of Nanking will never be lived down in Chinese memory.

There are different degrees of the "hate". S. Korea and N. Korea(duh!) and the PRC all promote, via government, the hate-on for the Japanese. It's "there" but far less pronounced in Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong, the Phillipines, Thailand, etc.

The Chinese haven't forgotten the atrocities committed by Japanese in China in the years leading up to World War II: particularly the infamous "Rape of Nanking".

There is anti-Japanese sentiment based on World War II in other Asian countries, but of course it's stronger in Korea because, unlike other Asian countries, anti-Japanese sentiment is not just the result of World War II here in Korea. The Korea-Japan conflict goes back much much further than that. The Koreans haven't forgotten the invasions of Toyotomi Hideyoshi back in the 1500s. For most Asians, the Japanese did some bad things in their country during the war. For Koreans, Japan is a country they've been struggling with for many centuries. Old enemies are hard to break.

Um, I think you guys are mistaken.

Chinese, Taiwanese and Phillippinos still carry a huge grudge against Japan.

Especially the Phillippines were just hit so hard by Japanese occupation. They considered native Phillippinos to be less than human and treated them in the worst way.

Yes, Filipinos are very bitter about the cruelty of the Japanese occupiers. Actually a lot of British are too, former prisoners of war. It's not unique to Korea.

The difference with Europe and Germany is that Germany as a country has tried to understand and learn from this period in History, and become a better country as a result. I believe this is why Europe has largely forgiven Germany.
