I came across an article in The Atlantic recently regarding American citizen evacuation in the event of an attack by the North Koreans. Do you think we could count on the Chinese to employ their ships in order to evacuate us?

No, but we can thank the ever growing Chinese presence in Korea, both population wise and commercially for deterring attacks by NK.

Most definitely. To prepare for this eventuality, go to Itaewon and find a tailor who can make you a Mao suit. Then spend your nights memorizing the sayings of Chairman Mao and learn how to scream "Death to capitalist pigs!" in Chinese.

I was reading the Atlantic article (did any of you bother to read it?) and it mentioned that we would need the plentiful nearby Chinese ships to evacuate us as the US military would be unable to do so (all the US ships would be busy with the war effort). Question is - would they do so?

Just wondering, but wouldn't we want Japanese ships to evacuate us, not Chinese ones.

Not even considering the political question so much as geography and where the front lines would be...

Heck its all international, pretty much any country's vessel whose destination does not take it near NK waters would do. Though if they pass near Somalia it might be as bad.

Regardless war is about as likely as a sudden reconciliation between the two nations.

I know I'll be viewed as naive and possible worse but I have very little concern that the north will ever attack.
I think the reason for the rhetoric and the odd incident or two (no disrespect for the loss of lives) are either their wanting their belliegerance to be bought off with food, medicine and humanitarian aid for their starving country or to keep the frail control over their own people and military.
The leader seems crazy but he's crazy like a fox. The chinese wouldn't allow it for one. The LAST thing they want is for America to have more of a reason to expand militarily on their doorstep. Second, NK knows that any war will result in their losing their country.
Eventually and this may take some time, they will go the way east Germany. They simply can't go on forever under the model they are presetly using. They know, SK knows it, the Chinese know it and we know it. In fact, Sk has plans for what will have to happen when not if unification happens.

If you wanted someone to read an article, why didn't you link it in the first place?

No, I don't have a copy of The Atlantic hanging around my officetel in Seoul.

But here, I'll do it for you. You're referring to a 7 month old article: http://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2010/12/in-korea-planning-for-the-worst-mass-evacuation/68276/

Not so hard, now is it?

This is why North Korea is a textbook dramatic actor in international relations parlance.

Short answer is NO.

If there is a war between the Koreas - China would be obligated under bilateral defense treaties (existing since 1953) to assist in the defense of N.Korea (so you can bet that the Chinese ships will more likely be used to assist in an invasion landing of S.Korea than the evacuation of Americans.

.

I'd hate to be turned back and forced to march against North Korean because I forgot my passport!

I have a feeling China might ignore said treaties were North Korea the aggressor.
