I still can't get over how absolutely terrible the weather is here. God-awful. I hear students tell me sometimes how much they love the rain, but I know it's a lie (defense mechanism). Razz

Funny how the summer break is situated in the middle of changma season when you can't even leave your front door.

I like the spring and autumn though. Pleasant. May and October. But can never get time off work then to go out and enjoy it Rolling Eyes

- The people wandering around wearing hospital pyjamas, often pushing IV stands
- The amazing degree of ignorance most Koreans have about the world outside their own country

You don't consider comparing Seoul to the Appalachians to be disingenuous? Wink A more 1:1 comparison would be Seoul to New York, or Seoul to London, etc.

Fair point.

Now consider how many of Billy Joe Jim Bob's and Elmer's northern white trash cousins live in major urban centers. They're usually the unionized blue collared crowd, police, firemen, etc.

I assume you'd agree Bensonhurst is actually a part of NYC.

The subject was: "things that shocked you about Korea". Those were two things that surprised me when I first encountered them in Seoul 10 years ago. Sorry to be so "unsophisticated".

The racism. Obviously I'd read about it on here before I came, but it was still startling to see my classes laugh whenever the black kid appeared in the dialogue videos. My co teacher would always tell them off afterwards, but when I asked her about it later (after this happened a number of times with different classes) she flat out denied it was anything to do with race. Some BS excuse along the lines of 'no, they laugh when the characters do funny things'. Yea, right.

Nightclubs- a few times a friends has been chatting to Korean girls before a Korean guy would come along and drag the girl away despite clearly not knowing each other. This has happened a few times.

The worst was when me and a friend went along to boxing gym and were flatly denied entry with the (presumably) gym owner telling us 'No foreigners, only Koreans'. Surprisingly the guy had good English too. Even more of a surprise was my CT's reaction. She laughed when I told her, as if it was some kind of rookie mistake to expect to be allowed in as a foreigner

Ugly.

or you thought was kinda cool, exists now or long gone Smile

seriously informative stuff and nothing beats 1st hand accounts

kinda cool: how Mass Transportation is relatively clean...i've lived in NYC and if you ride certain trains, they really do smell like piss from the night before or many other things...Denver, CO has Light Rail

i think Japan has really clean Mass Transit and i remember Korea having fairly clean Mass Transportation

The IRONY...

Like how they conveniently forget their past or "remember" (note) something obscure as a favorite pastime.

Yeah, one of my coteachers was a pathological liar. She had her eyes and her nose done and used to not only lie about it, but preach a bit about the evils of plastic surgery. She was a Jesus freak too. It's a good thing she lives in Korea, because in another country she might be dangerous. She's not just your typical white liar. It was kind of disturbing.
