|
|
I have been tutoring a Korean woman in English for some time now. She is a teacher at a hagwon in South Korea and I wanted to ask her to write me a letter of recommendation. Is she considered the type of source that they are looking for? She is, after all, a teacher and technically my employer since she hired me to help her. I think her Korean words could be beneficial for me. |

Teaching illegally and you want to use your student as a reference for a government job = probably not a good idea.

Tutoring is illegal? She moved to the U.S. and was looking for help with her English. Isn't this the same as getting paid to give guitar lessons? |

From your original post, and your posting on the job boards, people would presume that when you say you were tutoring a Korean woman, that you meant you were tutoring her in Korea. From your response, it seems that this is not the case....
If you were in Korea on an E-2 visa, tutoring would be illegal. If you had an F-series visa and did not register/report your income, that would also be illegal....
If you were in the US when the tutoring took place, then yer fine, and yeah, she would be a good reference.... |

I apologize for the confusion, I'm not used to internet forums.
From my perspective, I thought if I was applying to EPIK then it was clear I wasn't currently living in Korea. But it's whatever.
So she works as a reference then as somebody whom I tutored in the United States? |

Yes, she's an acceptable reference. |

Apology accepted.

She WAS a teacher (she isn't one now if she is in the US).
Lots of hagwan teachers (foreign), after getting burned by their hagwan employers and while still in Korea, try to apply to EPIK (or other PS programs) so you weren't clear about your location and it wouldn't be assumed as being the in the US.
When seeking accurate advice about employment abroad, the devil IS in the details. Your ambiguity will result in mistakes that WILL, in the long run, cost YOU time and money.
She would be fine as a reference but make sure that it is clear that the employment was in the US or it may cost you the job (for potential immigration violations) if the recruiter, EPIK or K-immigration are equally confused.
