I recently signed a GEPIK contract starting September 1st. This contract has been signed by myself and the principal. However, I am still in the states. A teacher friend of mine in Korea sent me word that the school received notice to not hire any NETs because of the funding situation. I'm wondering if I need to worry about this contract - are they really able to back out now?

This is kind of messed up. I rejected an offer for a SMOE position and a position here in the States because I was offered this GEPIK position. I have sent this school about $400 dollars and four months time worth of documents. I've bought a $1100 plane ticket.

If they back out on this contract, I don't know what I'm going to do.

Why in the world would you worry about a worthless teaching program called GEPIK? Don't feel so bad about it. Very Happy

You ask for them to get it back or get a new one done.

Sorry to hear of your situation. I'm sure there are going to be plenty more similar stories in the near future.

I wish I could tell you for sure one way or another what's going to happen,

but nobody knows. Not even GEPIK officials.

I would find out if the school gets its NET funding from GEPIK or from a city hall. If its from GEPIK, sorry man but they will cancel it. GEPIK has zero funds until March and is basically a dead programme now (I suspect it WILL be formally killed in March). I would get your docs back while you still can and apply for another job that starts on the same day, so you dont waste your plane ticket.

The same thing happened to me, though I was in Korea, but on vacation when I found out on Friday, after being assured that things would be ok.

My job is in Suwon, and I read a post on Waygook.org that those are pretty much all city hall funded. Anybody know if there is any truth to that statement?

Sent a message to my contact at the school, but I feel like I'm sitting on my hands at the moment trying to wait for a reply back.

Easy to say in hindsight, but never buy your flight ticket until you at least have your visa in hand (and I guess schools could still cancel on you then as it only costs them around ten bucks to sponsor a visa).

I can't say for sure about your situation, but some GEPIK schools are backing out of hiring for this fall season. The best thing you can do in your situation is to have a couple of back up plans in case the GEPIK offer does fall through. One of those back up options should be outside of Korea.

Keep us informed if your job offer is retracted so we can get more of an idea of the scale of the GEPIK fallout and good luck.

Don't believe everything you read on these boards. Don't believe recruiters. Believe the school, sometimes.

You could try to get a hagwon job through the recruiter who has your CBC. If they know anything about GEPIK still being interested, then they might not want to get you the hagwon job.

I applied directly to the school. I was recommended to the school by a friend of a friend, so (un?)fortunately no recruiters were involved.

I would think as long as the school has funding for you, you'll be ok. Did you not see the other threads about the state of GEPIK?

Even if they don't I wouldn't say all is lost. You can still apply somewhere else and have your documents transferred to the other school.

My god. September 1st, and you already have your plane ticket. Only with the JET Program did I have more than two weeks downtime between applying for the job and leaving my home country Smile Do you already have your visa processed?

I did, but I figured the school who was hiring me would know something as well. I figured they had to have funding if they were going through all this trouble to hire me back in July. I didn't figure I would be more informed than they were.

I have an F-4 visa so the process was very quick. I'm expecting it in the mail any day now.

You're on F-4? I don't think you have much to worry about then.
